I used to pass through Centralia on the way to my sisters.
It is very creepy and also quite fascinating. The town of Ashland nearby has quite the downtrodden post coal economy feel to it, but there are a few good restaurants.
I wouldn't go out of my to go through there but it is neat to see once.

i live close + ride my motorcycles by, but not much left to see. just another run down mining town with a few holdouts that not sell out!

I went through there wheeling back in the day with my 2002 Ford ranger. (and ranger club)

Thought it was all abandoned but apparently one part wasnt got held up by security but was allowed to leave since I wasnt doing anything bad.. apparently they had people dumping garbage etc.

I heard they covered(or were going to) the graffiti road with dirt to try to get less visitors.
My only advice is dont go exploring too much solo.
you could get into anything from running over rusted farm equipment to a mud bog.

IIRC: besides some minor body damage...We had a guy break his axle while winching through a snow/ice bank.
Just thinking about there makes me feel old now.

Still got the tee shirt.. let me go get a photo...

I live about 50 miles from Centralia. I haven't gone through there in likely 5 or 6 years. I did pass through that town numerous times a year for many decades since the 1950's. Usually enroute to the northern mountains or to visit friends upstate. It was a well-kept town before the coal vein fire eventually shut it down. There was a well-known speed and motorcycle shop in the middle of town named the "Speed Spot". Even long after the tear downs were started, you could still drive through the town for some years. Then a bypass route was set up for that section of highway. A number of residents refused to leave. I don't know the latest, but there may still be one or two residents alive. In more recent years the smell and steam escaping haven't seemed nearly as notable.

The so-called graffiti highway was covered in soil by the property owner a couple of years ago. I believe it had become a total clown fest there.

There are quite a few other PA. underground coal vein fires the last I have heard. Some predate the Centralia fire.

I heard from a friend that there are 2 maybe 3 people still living there. Once they pass away; the homes will be taken over by “imminent domain”
