I believe 8gb ram is the max for that board. Not sure if it has a sata 3 connection but an SSD would still help some. The processor is likely going to be where the bottleneck is but if you choose a lighter Linux distro, it will still run quite nice. MX Linux uses a lighter weight desktop than the more popular Ubuntu and Linux Mint (though both of those do have lighter weight versions). It's also built on the very stable and less bloated Debian Stretch base. That'd be my choice on your hardware even if you didn't make any changes.
