Avast! no good? Got some viruses on 2 PCs

I run Avast on this laptop I'm on and AVG on my desktop and Avast seems to be the better of the two....from my point of view anyway.
I tried to go the MSE route but since I don't do the XP auto-update thing, that program wanted to update my OS and this laptop slowed down to a virtual stop!

Avast has protected this computer in the past but I am really careful as to what I click on.

I also use the Windows Firewall as Zone Alarm seems to have "grown" to the point that it slowed both of my pcs down.

From reading reviews @ the link above, looks like they are talking of the paid for version of AVG.

I am running version 2 of MSSE but did run version 1 for a long time without issues.

Seeing that Avast is at the bottom of the protection rating, It will be AVG for me from now on.

The MSSE 1.0 got bad ratings with XP, MSSE 2.0 not rated yet.

I'll wait for MSSE 2.0 ratings before installing it.

I don't like hearing that. I just canned AVG and loaded MMSE.
Usually the worst things that happen to my computer is when I'm watching a game, messing around with the computer, and a beer or 2 - results vary

Very true. I just uninstalled ZA and suddenly the huge delay in logging on and off is gone. I did not suspect that.

I use MSE on XP, Vista, and 7 and have no issues. It doesn't hog resources, and as long as you have a way to install it, you can manually update it easily with a easy to locate download. Set it up to scan, and it scans. It's not perfect, but it finds things many other AV's/AMalware suites don't (AVG, MCAfee, Norton, Etc)

I used Zone Alarm for ease of mind with my wife (click happy), but it doesn't play well with 64bit 7 (random BSODs), so it's been removed.

That's very old-school thinking since there are lots of ways to get cooties on a computer nowadays and they aren't from just .exe's.

Just for giggles, can I convince you to download MSE or AVG and run a full scan to see what it comes up with?

I cleaned 500 off a computer yesterday.

I believe you are the same poster that said be prudent and careful about which things you do on the internet (avoid odd sites, porn, ect , don't click on e mail attachments, ect) and ost likely you will never see a virus or malware.

Problem is most people are very careless when it comes to virtual reality...

The way I keep clean is to think about the huge hunk of money I spent on my computer and how it will be damaged or costly to repair if I am careless.
