Air filter malfunction or something else?

Checked my honda civic's air filter yesterday. Could'nt believe what i saw. First picture is the unfiltered air side. Second is the filtered. I know the unfiltered side should be dirty but the filtered side looks much worse. Some filter materials are flaking off and coated with loose fibers. What do you think is happening here? Did water get in? Filter only has 2500 miles.

Maybe it got soaking wet? Either looks like dissolved paper or mold.

Thank you eljefino. I've been lurking here for a long time. I love this site. Yeah maybe it got soaking wet but I don't know how or why. Sorry about the images.

Consider replacing the air filter with a fresh, good one and then monitor it every now and then.

Hopefully eljefino was right about soaking part.

It is an oem filter. Suppose to be the best available here.

The stains indicate possible water. That could also dissolve some filters.
