Syrup?

well I donno if one treatment will do anything, you do have a modern car with a properly maintained filter... besides I even went so far as to dump coffee cups full of water in mine before... but I did have something to dump in and mix to remove the water too... I fugured out the ratios before I did the deed, though on that one.

Life is full of these ups and downs, I'm sure one time is not going to hurt.

I drank the grape Kool-Aid and put 6oz of acetone in my 23 gallon Caprice. I was talking with my brother about it (after I dumped it in there) and he posed a question: What's it going to do to your O2 sensor and/or catalytic converter? Good question, me thinks. Anyone been using this stuff long to have any adverse effects?

Acetone is just hydrogen, carbon and oxygen (C3 H6 O) and is highly volatile. It might be easier on the cat converter than gasoline. It should not be problem for the sensor or cat in any case.

is there another product, such as paint or laquer thinner that acetone would be the main ingredient. I can't find it here in japan.

Most nail polish remover is just acetone...just not the lemon type.

I wish it was that simple!

Terry,
Could you at least give us a hint? Ole Louis gives some reasoning aobut acetone decreasing the surface tension of gasoline, but if it were that simple I would think oil companies would have developed surfactants to deal with this, to increase mpg. I have access to a bubble point tensiometer and I guess I could test this theory of his at his recommended dosage, but if you could give me a clue then maybe I can avoid this.
Thanks!

Results are in. For the last two tanks in my Crown Vic Sport, I went from 19.1 to 20.2 mpg running 2 oz. per 10 gal. Nothing dramatic, but I guess that's a 5 percent increase.

I've run 6 oz. of acetone in my 30 gallon fuel tank on my 2005 Silverado.

I did this for three consecutive tankfulls, and ran the tank to empty each time. This is easy to do as I have a 100 round-trip commute to my current cleint site every day.

My fuel consumption has remained unchanged at 23.2 mpg for the 4.3l Votec V6.

Nail polish remover is acetone, menrial oil and an aromatic. Just mix 1 to 2 oz's of 2 cycle oil in the 1 qt can of acetone to get the same bang. I have used this for years in my 84 Shelby Charger racer, till I got caught

. The oil acts as a top cyclinder lube. Don't order it by the 55 gal drum, the cops will think you have a meth lab, been there. It is cheaper by the drum. DaveJ

It appears your running the minimum amount recommended. Try 9oz. next time. Also be careful running to low on gas you'll burn up the fuel pump, several hundred bucks for a new one. They say you shouldn't go under a 1/4 of a tank.

I've terminated my acetone experiment. No noticeable change in MPG using my 03 Sentra. I used 2 ounces per 10 gallons of gas. Despite what the original report says about improved starting while using acetone, my car idled VERY rough after starting...almost to the point that it would stall. When I would stop using acetone, the sputtering would stop and it would run like normal. Surprised that only 2 ounces per 10 gallons could have such a large effect on driveability. Just wanted to post my results.

4.5 oz/10g 4.6L 4*2 F150 went from 17mph (avg) 19mpg (best ever seen) to 19.5mpg (avg) 22.5 (best ever seen)
3.5oz/10g on the 3.0L v6 Lexus ES 300 gained about 2mpg from it.
3oz/10g on a 3.5L '02 Maxima went from 31mpg on a 120m highway trip to 35mpg on the same trip consistantly.

(a few months later) I went from an avg. of 24mpg to 26mpg overall... Now, I have run (this is my 3rd) tank of NON acetone fuel in the system. I am now avg. 25mpg. I only run 93 Chevron or Shell V-Power.

From an i4 Camry owner
(Note, the i4's without good maint used in the Camry platform tend to get less gas mileage than the v6's. i4's should be 25-28mpg combined, v6's historically get 20-25mpg depending how you drive.)

tank before 18 mpg
during 20mpg
after 26mpg
The car was getting around 20mpg depending how he drove it off acetone(never broke 22mpg) - explaining the huge bump.

I've been doing this since last March or April & talked a bunch of people into doing it both in person & on forums. Personally, it seems to have almost an accumulative affect. If you get a gain from it, it'll stay there, or close to it for several tanks before falling off. Once you find the amount that works with your vehicle just do it every other/third tank.
On another note, all the articles say 2oz/10g, at most 3oz. In all honesty I've YET to run across a car in person that didn't did better somewhere between 3-4oz than at 2oz.
Anyone that hasn't seen anything from it, when you get done trying less acetone - go back and try more.

My second run did not see the same improvement, however, I do not think I drove any different the first run through. I am giving this a couple of tanks off and then reapplying. If I do not see improvement again I will terminate as a oft used additive, though I wouldn't hesitate running every 3-5K for cleaning as my acceleration and smoothness was improved.

I suspect that the gains seen by some are due to a cleaning effect on the fuel injectors. This would explain why some vehicles take 2-3 tanks before any effects are seen. And it would explain why a "residual" effect is seen for a few tanks afterwards. It would also explain why some vehicles see no change. Their injectors were already clean.

If increases were due to reduced surface tension, you would see an immediate benefit.

here is my results on my 98 vic using 0.234 times gals i add of acetone:i was getting 16.5mpg
sept 30th..25.14 mpg
oct.4th..21.7mpg
oct.7th..21.2mpg
oct.10th..27.49mpg
oct.11th..15.5mpg (bad snow storm 12inchs snow)
oct.14th..22.96mpg
oct.19th..22.71mpg

for how long before were you getting 16.5mpg?

One-time check or average over at least 10 tanks?
