    JASO MA-2

The MA, MA1 and MA2 standards refer to the quality of the oil also having to meet at least one of the API, ILSAC or ACEA standards (Table 3 in the JASO link) and the physiochemical requirements in table 4. So the MA standards then come in over the top. Every reference to oil to be used in bikes...

Concours 14 has crazy long oil change intervals ?

Like Rick_A I have been using 10,000km to 16,000km oil and filter change intervals on my ST1100, depending on what rides I have on. The shorter more Honda like interval is for mineral oils/easy to remember, longer interval is for full synthetic oil (10W-40 or 15W-50) that I used the last few oil...

Triumph 1yr/10,000 mile OCI on new Explorer

I have a Triumph Trophy that uses the same engine. Using the same oil as recommended by Triumph(full synthetic) in my Honda ST1100 the gear change is still great at 15,000kms intervals (Honda recommend 12,400 on normal oil) so no reason that the Triumph interval is too long.

Full Synthetic after break in? - First Oil Change?

Here is some food for thought on the subject of running in. But as mentioned, many vehicles come from the factory with synthetic. I know that triumph use synthetic oils, and at the 500 mile first service that is what is used. http://www.ashonbikes.com/content/running

Technical Analysis: 90º V4 Engine By Kevin Camero

Honda is already using v4s in the 800 and 1200 range of street bikes (VFR variants, shaft in the 1200 and chain in the 800) and did so from 1990 to recently in the ST1100 and ST1200 (although these were longitudinal in the frame) Cost of production has always been cited as an issue.

Who's got some high mileage bikes??

There are great roads in what pass for mountains down here, along the east coast great dividing range. We don't get those really spectacular mountain roads as the highest roads go to about 1200 metres. Also as our population is relatively sparse for the size of the place, lots of gravel roads...

Who's got some high mileage bikes??

96 Honda ST1100 with 193,000kms on it. Original engine, clutch etc. maintenance items on cooling system, carbs and timing belt are the only things I have had to do.

    Gel battries and battery tenders

I have used a CTEK charger for quite a few years with no problems on an AGM battery.

Trying to set my idle correctly; tach not working.

What bike is it? Older ones use a tacho cable which may be broken. Even newer ones with electronic tachos do not all do an initial sweep on startup (eg my 96 ST1100). For an electonic one could be as simple as a connection loose. Check all the fuses as well.

    HDEO CHEAP OIL DOWNUNDER

Quite often 20 litre drums are on special, such as RX Super at the moment for less than $100.

    Valvoline 10W-40 motorcycle oil. . .

The oil tests on the ST1100 on here indicate that oils can hold up well in bikes. For me gear change quality is what I go by, regardless of how far the oil has gone. I have an ST1100 and mostly go by 10,000kms oil and filter changes (easy to remember!), unless it is convenient to change earlier...

    Redline 15W50, 12,087 miles, Honda ST1100

ST11s seem to all have a clutch growl of some sort. Mine does it some times, mainly when cold and the first corner or decent acceleration of the day, then you can do whatever you want. Most times no noise even under the same conditions. I have tried various oils, mainly HDEOs and castrol Edge...

    Time for an oil survey?

Honda ST1100 with 142,000kms on it. Ryco or valvoline filters (z436 or equivalent). I use 10W40 or 15W40 HDEOs usually, but just started using Castrol Edge 10W60 synthetic as I use it in the car as well. 10,000kms oil and filter change intervals (OEM is 12,500 but 10,oookms is easier to remember!)

How many miles have you ridden this year?

I have not gone many places this year. 8,000 miles only so far, unless I get some riding in this week. 1996 ST1100 with 80,000 miles in total on it.

    Max Life 10W40, 8017 miles, Honda ST1100

I am afraid to say that 100,000 miles on an ST11 is nothing. They go for at least twice as long as that on the engine with no issues. There are some issues with coolant hoses and the like, but the same as any vehicle with age and miles.

    Fuel Economy with different weights

I have used a 15W-40, 10W-40 and 20W-50 in the same bike (ST1100). I can't say that there was any appreciable fuel economy changes given all the other variables at play.

    Motor Oil as Engine Coolant

The Suzuki bikes that are oil cooled (they still make a GSX1400) are more a refined development of an air cooled engine with more advanced oil cooling. The oil is specifically directed to various part of the motor and oil is passed through a normal oil cooler. There are oil jets to the underside...

    Motorcycle Fork Seal Grease

The general instructions for the emulators mention adjusting spring preload/the spacer. Is that a pic of Fred H's bike? I know the name and his knowledge from FJR and now GTR14 forums.
