Increased Oil Burning in Colder Temps??

Hey everyone, Just a question, Both of my vehicles (2002 Mazda Protege5 w/270,000km & 2006 Ford Escape 3.0L 4x4 w/90,000km) never burn a drop of oil in the warmer temps..... but i have noticed very small increase during these colder winter months (both vehicles i noted being down about 1/2...

Thanks for the advice CATERHAM!! If price was not the issue, would you recommend the Toyota 0w20 vs. Pennzoil Platinum 0w20?

    Mazda's new propriety 0W-20 GF-5 with Moly

Hey Everyone, I am a tech at a Canadian Mazda dealership and was unaware of the apparent quality of this oil..... This leaving me with a few questions..... - Is this oil made by Petro Canada? Is this the same oil US vs Canada? - As I have stated before, I have become a rather avid Pennzoil...

    OEM oil filters??

So what is the best PROVEN aftermarket filter that is readily available? Wix? I always assumed that the aftermarkets were the best, but..... Also does anyone know who makes the mazda filters? especially the Mazda Protege ones..

    OEM oil filters??

I admit that I have only scanned this section of the forum but I have not noticed many threads regarding OEM oil filters and there quality? I only wonder this because I assume that the manufacturer engineers have spent a lot of time and money to ensure that there warranty protected engines are...

Does mild coolant level drop signal coolant in oil

exactly!! I would not be too concerned unless you are using a litre or more every 4-5 months!!! evaporation is GOING to happen..... if there was something to worry about, you would likely have other symptoms.

Does mild coolant level drop signal coolant in oil

agreed that in a sealed system coolant loss should be a minimum. But.... as you said there is some lost to steam from the pressure relief in the rad cap. Also most coolant resivoirs are not under pressure so over time a few hundred ml of loss is normal for sure!!

Does mild coolant level drop signal coolant in oil

I would have to assume that there is an acceptable amount of coolant loss due to evaporation.....??..... I work as a tech at a Mazda dealership (mazda is not known for coolant usage in any of the late models) and I am forever topping up coolant resivoirs and inch or two (few hundred ml) during...

Opinions on Petro Canada Bulk Oil?

This is purely out of curiosity , I work as a tech at a Mazda Dealer. We use Petro Canada brand bulk oil in multiple grades ( 0w20, 5w20, 5w30, 75w90, etc...) which is recommended by Mazda Canada. Just wondering if anyone had any info on the quality of this oil and or UOA's? Note: 0w20 is all...

    Good shear stable oil?

With all due respect...... I fully understand trying to operate a vehicle on a budget, trust me! But... You are trying to keep alive a 3/4 dead horse that is bleeding to death and very thirsty for fuel!! Not to mention the ridiculous amount of environmental damage coming out of the thing! You...

Oil resistance to flow at operating temp question

Think that I have got this down for the most part!! Secondary question, I often see people referring to different brand (lets say 5w30) as being thicker or thinner?? How do two oils of the same grade but different brand have different viscosity? This seems crazy unless it is so trivial that it...

Oil resistance to flow at operating temp question

LOL, I think i get it but wow, still a bit confusing..... mechtech- when you say that "a 5 cold is thicker than a 30 hot", you mean in a physical "Pour" manner and not the actual resistance to flow "viscosity"..... correct? Sorry guys, just want to get a good grip on the basic fundamentals...

Any UOA's on Mazda FL22 coolant?

Hey there, As a Mazda Tech and vehicle owner, I would love to see an actual UOA on this coolant!! Supposed to be great stuff but would love to see some numbers to back what Mazda tells us

Oil resistance to flow at operating temp question

I really appreciate these answers, Quest..... So what you are telling me is don't judge the viscosity based on the appearance of oil thickness when draining from a hot or cold engine.... it is the modifiers that are controlling viscosity during operation regardless of the physical thickness...

Oil resistance to flow at operating temp question

Understood but, Isn't the theory that as oil temp rises, it starts to act as a 30w oil (In the 5w30 example).... this would mean that it now has a higher resistance to flow and is now "thicker" moving at a slower rate through journals/bearings..?.. So why does oil drained from a hot engine have...

Oil resistance to flow at operating temp question

Forgive me if this is a rookie question, As I read the motor oil university page I feel a tad confused... I understand that a 5w30 conventional oil is essentially a 5w oil that is modified by additives to flow like a 30w at operating temp.. So that being said, if oil (Weight) is the resistance...
