I think that OP is exaggerating a bit too much. In general, if you use Auto Part store brand, or Major brand oil in the specs your car calls for, you'll be fine for a commuter vehicle. My father was loyal to his major brand oil, and "never had a problem"... but I, the rebellious (and cheap) son...

Since someone mentioned furnace filters..... The 3M Filtrete grades that remove very fine particles should be the 4in thick variety, giving more surface area.. otherwise they can indeed impede air flow and make the furnace or AC unit unhappy. A modestly efficient air filter for a furnace...

The Hastings premiums are still sold there. I may just go that route and spend the extra bucks. Hastings is and always has been top shelf quality.

Interestingly, the oiled/not oiled argument is fun. The OEM filter on the Ford 500 was oiled.. the Replacement Motorcraft was too... Then I just started buying Hastings for it... They are Oiled too... the other Hastings filters for my other cars aren't. I wonder if Clarcor was making the OEM...
