Anybody ever use an FL-500S size filter in place of a PH10060 (GM 6.0 liter L96 application)? I have four Purolator Synthetic PSL22500 filters that are very similar in size (although slightly longer), have the same threads (M22-1.5), even similar bypass ratings (22 PSI). Wondering if it’s worth the risk, I’ve heard the LS engines can be picky about oil filters.

I’ll take a chance on this. I have used a Fram 10575 in place of a Fram 10060. It is slightly longer. It worked fine, but is was when the 10575 had the lower bypass rating. I believe the Fram 10575 crosses with the Purolator PSL22500. Physically they will fit. As far as back pressure goes, I can’t help you with that. What year is that L-96?

It's a 2011 Express 3500 van. The recommended PH10060 has a 9-12 PSI bypass, the PSL22500 has a 16 or 22 PSI bypass (depending on the source of the info), and full synthetic media which "should" flow better than the blend PH10060 or factory PH48 does.

Important question. What is your current oil pressure at highway speed. P.S. I meant to say bypass pressure not back pressure in my last post.

Actually I’m going to anticipate your answer. If it’s 40 psi, the PSL2250 is the wrong filter. It’s made for 2014 and above Gen 5 engines introduced around 2014 such as the 5.3 and 6.2 running 70 psi at highway speed. Your 6.0 is a Gen 4 engine.

Now, I absolutely am not interested in discussing the pros and cons of having too high of a bypass pressure pressure for your vehicle. I will leave that up to the others.

Interesting-when I bought the PSL22500s, they were listed for Ford FL-500S applications, didn't realize Ford had the high PSI system that GM is using now. I haven't brought the Express home from the seller yet, but 40 PSI seems about what it showed on the test drive. Weird that there's that much difference between a 16 PSI bypass filter (what these PSL22500s were rated back when they were made), and the 9-14 PSI of the recommended ones. I have to rely on historical info on the Puro Synthetic filters, they haven't been made in 4-5 years now.

To confirm look at the Purolator website and source a 2015 Chev Silverado with a 6.2 liter engine. It will say a 22500. smile

Right-but they've changed their bypass PSI ratings since my PSLs were made (back in Jan. 2015 the bypass was only 16 PSI, the PBL22500 Boss [& other **22500 filters] are now all 22 PSI. I may just roll the dice and try one & see if my PSI changes any, they're pretty close to the same size. Makes me wonder what would happen if FL-500S users used the new 22 PSI bypass filters on their older engines(?)

The FL-500S is in good company : 2013 5.8 liter Supercharged Shelby V8, 2012 5.0 4V Boss 302, 2013 4VMustang GT , 2016 4V Mustang GT 350 as well as the 3.5 and 3.7 overhead cam V6 engines from 2011 on.

Sounds like Fram and Purolator both upped the bypass pressure. I would say the older ones can be used in your 6.0 with no concerns. Some may argue the higher bypass ones can be used too, but I don't. smile
