For the past two weeks i have been performing a constant italian tune up on my Escort.

Driving to and from work, instead of lugging it in 5th, i drive it in 4th, which means around 4000rpm at 70Mph.

Not only does the engine run much smoother, but it's always had a nasty, constant hydraulic lifter rattle ( not just one, all 8 )

To my surprise, the rattle that it had is nearly gone, not completely but sure is a lot quieter than before.

Thoughts?

IMO you're simply training the internals for a mission into space

That is cool.

It reminded me, I do Italian tune-ups on my parents' cars every few months. Both of them rarely use more than 1/2 throttle and never approach redline. I visit them, warm the cars up fully, and "fully utilize" their engine and transmission capability. I also make sure the brakes aren't glazed over by a bit of impromptu canyon driving.

My mom's car gets that "bad catalytic converter" smell and the tune-up seems to clear it a bit. (Or maybe I psychologically think it helps...)

I check tire pressures, fluids, and other things too.

In space, no one can hear your lifter tick.

Oh come on, 3000-4000rpm isn't going to blow the engine lol

An '88 528e with a 4 speed automatic will go 68 MPH at 5K rpm, in 2, 105 in 3 I got 70 out of it at 5200 then the limiter shut the injectors down. The engines took it in stride It was a 3200 lb car with onlt 128 hp 2.7L. More torque though

An Italian Tune Up is accelerating at Wide Open Throttle (WOT) up to redline, and decelerating once the engine is at full operating temps. Complete 2-3 times from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th gear. Goal is full enrichment and maximum flow in the combustion chamber.

running at higher rpm for a decent creates more heat thats said to keep carbon to a minimum on DI only engines as its not IF but WHEN carbon buildup causes issues. glad you got benefits from that

Not only does higher rpm force oil around oil passages at higher pressure, it also tends to run it hotter. This could improve the action of some additives - cleaning and/or antiwear.
More knowledgeable people can chime in.
Either way - enjoy and dont speed just because the car runs better

The quietest my junkyard 5.4 engine has ever been was after pulling my Jeep up a hill at 4000 RPM for a few minutes straight. I was running it harder than it's ever been run before, at the steepest part I was losing speed with my foot firmly planted in 2nd gear. That engine usually quiets right down when I run it hard.

You've won the internet for today.

Before we got overdrive 5th gears, 4th was your direct drive top gear, and that would be normal revs at that speed.

I'd rather do some WOT pulls on 3rd and 4th gear and then let it cool down in 5th in between. Not sure what is more beneficial, but glad is working for you.

Since i am 1/2 italian, i am doing the tune every time i drive.

Amazing what tricks the mind can play on you to give someone that warm fuzzy feeling.

When I'm overseas, sometimes I ride with guys in the Hilux and TLC … drives me crazy to see how soon they are in 3rd gear and the driveline just shakes from the early shift.

HaHa … yeah, used to tune up dads old Ford alright. When he was getting older, he asked me to take it in for inspection. Not to sweat about the tires … I paid well for a new set of Michelin's

He got upset that I'm wasting money … Well, told him I probably owe one more set. He chuckled then.
