This type of lubricating oil has the following average Properties:

Kinematic [email protected] - 20.00 cSt

Base Number - 100

Pour Point - + 3.0C

Flash Point - 235C

Density - 58.1 Lbs/cubic foot (930 kg./cubic meter)

What might be the application for this lubricant??

This question is NOT open to Engineering disciplines, Tribologists, or Chemists.

Additional data Hint:

It is used mainly in large, two-cycle engines.

The fuels for these engines may contain anywhere from 1.5% to 4.5% sulfur.

I don't know if I disqualify for studying diesels at Nashville Auto Diesel College, but it's the engine oil used for large ocean going vessels.

Large ship engines running on bunker fuel oil.

Or - - also large I.C.E. power plants.

Getting VERY rare - but fit this description.

Thanks for your responses!

Could it be used as a way lube? Possibly.

Those who guessed a lube for ocean vessel engines were spot on.

The high Base Number is required to combat the high amount of sulfur in the heavy fuel oil.

Shell Marine "Alexa" will have two lubricants available for ships that will be running 0.5% sulfur (BN=40) and 0.1% (BN=25) fuels in the near future, respectively.

Too much BN (alkalinity) and you run the risk of disrupting the cylinder liner's oil film, so there has to be just enough alkalinity to combat the percentage of acids produced during combustion.

Once again, "balance" is key here.

Now we're talking about "diesel" lubes that shouldn't be used in gassers. wink
