Hi,
First time poster.
I've been scouring the forum for information on what oil to run in my 2014 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design with Polestar pack. These are a 335hp 3.0L turbocharged 6 cyl. I'm in Australia so I don't have access to several of the brands that are available elsewhere.

Volvo recommend Castrol Edge professional ACEA A5/B5. But doesn't look like Castrol import an equivalent retail version in Australia as their lube guide only lists Magnatec Stop/Start A5.

My last fill I used the Nulon recommended 5w30 which actually didn't list A5/B5 but did say it was c3-12 specification.

But I was looking at another brand here which is Penrite and there lube guide recommended this. https://www.penriteoil.com.au/applications/car-4wd/engine-oils/hpr-0-0w-30-full-synthetic
It also suggested.
https://www.penriteoil.com.au/applications/car-4wd/engine-oils/hpr-5-5w-40-full-synthetic
I think the HPR 0 is the better choice as per the MSDS it actually has some actual synthetic in the mix whereas the HPR5 is just using Grade III that was my amateur interpretation if I'm reading them right.

https://www.penriteoil.com.au/msds

But another option I found which they actually don't have linked to their lube guide is their 10 Tenths Racing 5. Which they claim is 100% PAO & Ester plus whatever additives. https://www.penriteoil.com.au/applications/car-4wd/engine-oils/10-tenths-racing-5w-30-100-pao-ester This is actually the same cost to marginally more expensive then the HPR 0 and they say it can be used where the manufacturer calls for ACEA A5/B5, so would it actually be a better oil to use than the HPR 0 or 5?

welcome

I think the biggest concern is the TBN, rather than the base stock. I've got several Volvo UOAs on Castrol (0W40 A3/B3), Pennzoil 5W40 and Mobil 0W40. Very different base stocks, all had excellent results.

The Achilles heel in your Volvo (like mine) is the PCV system, which will begin to form sludge once the TBN is depleted. So, strong TBN, or formulation for long drain interval, would be my primary consideration.

My son in San Diego (realize your conditions maybe waaaaaay different) has a '14 T6 R Design..No Polestar chip but still over 300 hp. Pennzoil Ultra 5W30 is what we have used for 50,000+ miles..A5/B5 rated. Fram Ultra oil filters. Vehicle runs like a champ. Less than a 1/4 qt used in 5,000 OCI's. Never did a oil analysis....oil does seems darker than all my other cars...Very faint fuel smell on occassion...

Pennzoil Ultra

Thanks for the comments guys.

I probably should have mentioned no Pennzoil in Australia.

I also dont know much about TBN.

Agree much with the above.

In extreme temperatures you will benefit (albeit it's questionable how much) from an A3/B3 or A3/B4 oil.

I'd pick something from a major manafacturer and look for appovals like MB 229.5, LL01, Porshce A40 etc.

Alternatively, an ACEA C3 would see you well also.

That’s what I would do.

MB 229.5 is designed for long drain intervals and is the specification for my twin turbo MB.

You don’t have Pennzoil, but Shell Helix Ultra uses the gas to liquid base and meets MB 229.5, Porsche A40, and ACEA A3/B3 and A3/B4.

A Penrite product that meets those specs would be good as well.

Let me add that a good Xw30 is fine as well. I’ve had good UOA results with Xw40 but as long as those specs are met, either viscosity would be fine.

I've had good results with M1 0w-40 in the '01 V70XC for three years. My wear metals were always well below average. I stepped up to the 0w-40 when I started to regularly two a 1000# trailer in hilly country. There was one hill in particular where I would be revving over 4000 RPM for five miles. I have since stopped towing with that vehicle and reverted back to 10w-30.

I checked with Penrite and there recommendation was for their HPR 0.

https://www.penriteoil.com.au/index...Kq4CY5AIVmoBwCh0UTQp6EAAYASAAEgIr__D_BwE
Some other easily available options are.
https://www.shell.com.au/motorists/...etic/shell-helix-ultra-ect-c3-5w-30.html
https://www.valvoline.com/en-austra...l/synpower-synthetic-engine-oil-fe-5w-30
CASTROL EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4 https://www.castrol.com/en_au/austr...X1oGY5AIVECUrCh3aeQv1EAAYASAAEgJRzPD_BwE

Although there are options with xW40 oilsit looks like there is fewer and typically they don't go on sale very often. Actually the HPR 5 which is common and on sale regularly they call a 5w40 but it is actually a 5w30 that they market as a 5w40 due to having extra zinc and claiming it provides the protection of a 40w.

I'm in a similar boat at the moment. I'm in Sydney 😁

I've got a 2015 V60 T6 R-des W/P* and a 2009 XC60 T6.

Both due a change (XC60 oil has been neglected by prior owners).

After a little research I'm doing quick changes in the XC60 to remove the terrible build up (had to do the PCV which is usually less of a problem on the T6). I went for Penrite HPR5 as I scored 20L for $120 and I liked the TBN, A40 spec, 229.5 spec etc.... Not A5/B5 though...

For the V60 given I know the history I went for the Valvoline Synpower FE 5w30 as the viscosity look similar to the HPR0 from Penrite on the data sheets. Is A5/B5 rated. Again not a bad cost at $160 for 20L (not on special).

Baseline UOA will be done on both this time round...

Btw what if I said Ford Fiesta?

You don’t have Pennzoil, but Shell Helix Ultra uses the gas to liquid base and meets MB 229.5, Porsche A40, and ACEA A3/B3 and A3/B4.

^This.
But, take into consideration that you have access actually to more MB229.5 products than we do in the US. For example, Castrol in Australia has 0W40, 5W30 and 5W40 available in MB229.5, which we here in the US do not have (We do not have 5W40 MB 229.5). Also, you have Castrol 5W30 in two ACEA C3 flavors, both meeting MB 229.51 but one meeting VW 504.00/507.00 which is most stringent XW30 specification when it comes to wear.
Also, SHell Helix, Mobil1 etc. are all good candidates. Since engine is designed around ACEA A5/B5 you do not have to jump too thick to W40. You can run MB 229.5 or MB 229.51 (but get one that also has VW 504.00/507.00) in W30 grade.

When I get in front of a computer again (and not my phone) I'll take a look at some of the specs and oil options listed.
Thanks

Ok, so I've been doing some digging and narrowed it down to a few options based on having ACEA C3, MB229.5/.51, and VW 504/507.

Penrite Enviro+ 5w-30 https://www.penriteoil.com.au/applications/car-4wd/engine-oils/enviro-5w-30-full-syn approved for VW 504/507 and meets the requirements for MB229.51 and ACEA C3.

Castrol Edge 5w-30 LL https://www.castrol.com/en_au/austr...ands/castrol-edge/edge-product-page.html Approved for ACEA C3, VW504/507, and MB 229.51

Valvoline Synpower XL III https://www.valvoline.com/en-austra...npower-synthetic-engine-oil-xl-III-5w-30 Approved VW 504/507, meets MB 229.51 and ACEA C3

Shell Helix Ultra ECT C2/C3 0W-30 https://www.shell.com.au/motorists/...c/shell-helix-ultra-ect-c2-c3-0w-30.html It lists ACEA C3, MB 229.51, VW 504/507 but I'm not sure if it's approved or just meets the specs.

Mobil One 5w-30 ESP https://www.m1oils.com.au/product/mobil-1-5w-30-esp/ approved for VW504/507, MB229.51 and meets C3

Nulon 5w-30 European https://www.nulon.com.au/products/f...full-synthetic-5w-30-european-engine-oil meets ACEA C3, MB229.51, and VW 504/507 but no approvals listed.

Given the above the only one claiming approvals for ACEA C3, VW504/507, and MB229.51 is the Catrol Edge 5w-30 LL so it may be the one to go for.
