Ford dual port/DI, when is each used?

So many new vehicles are coming out with duel fuel injection. Just wondering when and how each type of injector is used. Starting, under load, both together? Vehicle specific is the ford 5.0
 
If it is anything like Toyota's, it would be a blend of both and gradually shift from mostly PI in low power output (RPM and throttle) to mostly DI in high power output.

The theory if I understand correctly, is at low HP / rpm DI burn too fast and will get the combustion too hot for NOX, or they have to retard the timing / burn too rich and gets PI emission. Washing the intake valves to eliminate deposit is just a side effect.
