You can always celebrate the birthday (if you were going to) on some other day. That's what we tend to do, pick a weekend day as it's no fun to go to school (or work) on your birthday.

I am 65 and have had dogs all my life. Those goofy dogs become your best friend that when they are gone it is a great loss. Sorry for you loss.
