But but its a VW, how can that be, it should have broken down half way. So now VW owns Pikes peak with a plug in.

They need to take a race that takes real cajones, the Mt Washington Autoroad. Much steeper, windier, and dirt......

Advance 3:49 for the real stuff.

Glad the VW didn't go off the edge right into the... VW parking lot below.

"The all-electric race car not only set a new record for EVs, but set the fastest time ever, by any car, even ones with high-performance, gas-gulping, engines.

Pikes Peak is the second oldest race in the US, after the Indianapolis 500, and it is one of the world’s most iconic: 12.42 miles of 156 twists and turns rising nearly 5,000 feet in elevation.

The previous record, eight minutes and 13 seconds, was set in 2013 by Sebastian Loeb in a Peugeot 208."

You've got to read the engineering story highlights in that Wired article.
Very revealing for people who want to know more about a race car beyond it's paint job.

They did it with a 43 kWH battery, which, if put in a Tesla-like or Leaf-like road car, would get you about 180 miles range, BTW.

15 seconds faster than the previous record in a 8 minute race is pretty cool.

I was going to come in here and say I wonder how they cheat emissions on their race cars when they are not broken down, but these guys beat me to it.

Impressive but not surprising that something electric could do that well. Perfect racing situation for an all electric setup.

Too bad it is all pavement now. I was up there back in 2011 when they were working on the last bit of paving. My wife was green with how fast I was driving it in a pickup. Can’t imagine what she would do going that fast.

My favorite pikes peak vehicle is this one https://youtu.be/rvs5jYCMSD8 .

crazy stuff for sure!!! my fav is WRC cars on the gravel + snow + ice!!!! just wonder where all the $$$$$$$ comes from, people buying high profit aka overpriced parts. entertaining to say the least!!

Since then, there's been a full run external video of the record run released.

Younger folk may like it, but the angry whine of a motor is no substitute for the sound of an engine.

And what all but a few stories failed to mention, because they swallowed and then regurgitated VW's PR whole, was that the chassis was built by Norma, which Dumas drove in his previous attempts. It was not "from scratch."

I like the sound just fine, sounds like power.

Also chances are should I ever in my life get to drive a car like it, I would not focus on how it sounds much.
Never was much into revving engines at traffic lights I guess.

I know that Dumas self funded a few Norma built cars for Pike's, And would not be surprised if they were involved in VW's effort.
Have a link to that?

Yep, I recall reading something about that. I'm surprised that none of the teams have tried something with one of their more modern F1 cars, but, of course, one has to be careful to not run afoul of the testing regulations.
