Does anyone use GIMP or something similar other than PhotoShop?

I would like to get better at using Gimp or another program and I want to know if there is some on-line tutorial somewhere for this or another product.

Thanks for any help you can provide. thumbsup

I've used it a fair bit but definitely prefer Photoshop, which is a far more polished app in comparison.

However, Gimp is very powerful and going through the manuals and online stuff right on the Gimp site would be a good start to getting familiar with it.

How much complexity do you need? I have managed to get by with Paint.NET for years now.

I used to be a Adobe PS fan but their licensing model is just.. bleh. I'd rather buy Corel Paint Shop Pro and get used to that.

The licensing situation isn't realistically that bad. Adobe used to give out PS6 for free on their website. They still might, I'm not sure. It's also an open secret that they have a policy of NOT preventing people from pirating the software because it gives them a free turnkey userbase of young creative types.

GIMP is actually a very good photoshop alternative, but it does have quite the learning curve.

You should start At GIMP's tutorial site

I want to use it mainly for editing out backgrounds from things in the foreground.

Gimp rocks, I use it. It is a bit oddball in the GUI.

You can get portable apps for a zip drive.

And you can get GIMP in portable apps.

I like GIMP...am scarcely a proficient user, but get stuff done.
