So free education itself is not a bad thing at all, but I just don't know if the US is ready for it YET.

Sure it is but only for those that are eligible to be educated on the public dime.
There is no SAT score, they look at how well you did in school from the get go, most people are not eligible, the vast majority go on to do trade apprenticeships.

That's a big difference to every moron in high school has a right to higher education. You educate people with at least some brains not the bottom of the barrel with them.

NO FREE SPEECH!

This is a private forum and not subject to first amendment protections. The first amendment (like many amendments) is designed to protect the citizenry from the powers of government. This forum is not government, so the first amendment does not apply.

FREE.

Thanks for the laugh.

Nothing is ever free. Somebody is paying for it.

My cut on this is......For the first half of the last century, high school was the expected minimum to get a decent job. And it was available for no cost to the student.

Now, a decent job requires secondary education.

My proposal: Community college or the first two years at a public university be paid for by the government, but only those classes that the student passes. The student pays up front, but is reimbursed when he/she is successful in passing. Loans could be available for a first time student to start in this system.

As a Country, we are not doing ourselves any favors by denying education to those who are capable, but unable to bear the cost. It makes us substantially less competitive in the world.

You use the word "denying"....as though it is factual.

Exactly! That somebody is called the taxpayer, you know the poor bastar. working for a living, the same one these POS hate.

Funny how the most useless discussion will yield highest post count. Nothing about politics is discuss-able, if you think you have a say, or can contribute somehow, you are the as previously mentioned chalk. Let it go, it's a business like everything else in this country that shouldn't be. Locally, "unworthy" students get the boot instead of tutoring, to collect tuition for an extra quarter. The same reasons may apply to the unworthy student as here; "I don't like(agree with) you, therefore you suck and kicked out until you suck less/ get a "professor" that likes you"
Here I go again. Thanks.
/Computer off for the rest of the day.

You're being reasonable!! Stop!!

Let's not forget the benefits of an educated populace. If your doctor/ contractor/ mechanic makes a mistake due to inexperience and has to "go back in", he still knows more than you, and you're getting snowed. You're paying more for a worse result. Since you don't notice, you don't quantify this.

Bump into the average idiot, say, at work. Muse to yourself how much better it could be if he spent more time in school. I'm particularly disturbed by bad grammar.

If an institution of higher learning in this country cannot protect and encourage freedom of thought and speech, and it appears some are having a lot of trouble doing exactly that, they don't need more public money - they need to go into the dustbin of history.

I would say most are doing just the opposite...they are trying to suppress free speech...

A young person should not have to depend on their family's success in life. All that does is continue to keep the wealth in the hands of the currently wealthy.
In order for this to be a land of equal opportunity, money cannot be a factor. Yes, we can take loans out, but then we are in debt for most of our life.
If you keep the masses in debt, they will never rise above a paycheck to paycheck existence.
Significantly subsidizing higher education would definitely level the playing field in this country. A shift in the balance of power from the established oligarchy to the masses is truly the concern that the "ruling" class.
There are too many people that think that educational opportunity is a privilege and not a right. It is a shame that people think we should live in a dog eat dog society.

It is the land of opportunity, not equal opportunity. Each person has the right to work thru life and reach any level you can achieve but you are delusional if you think everything is free and money doesn't buy you things that others can't afford.

Yes they are. It's happening not only in our supposed institutions of learning...it's happening just about everywhere. Unless, of course, you are lock-step in line with a certain status quo.

Germany doesn't send just any idiot to school do they?
And who paid vast sums to defeat Germany not so long ago and then EVEN MORE under the Marshall Plan to REBUILD the country? Who'se been paying vast sums to station troops in Europe and carrying the weight of THEIR security? I'd like to have THAT dough back for "free" education for the neversweats.

Call me the odd-ball....but I don't think it "reasonable" at all that my tax dollars should pay for a complete stranger to go to a community college.
They are adults...free to make choices...free to do as they wish.

Just don't ask me to pay for it.

Well put, Trav. There's always more to it than the gimmi generation lets on.

Our city had huge protests for it...all the socialists want it too..we have the cheapest tuition in North America and we complain..so cheap you folks down south would laugh...tuition here for residents is under 2 grand a semester and add overpriced books..onlyl..5-6 grand per year...this education should be free thing is nuts. Maybe they should take an economics class to figure out how we pay for their education...u get educated, and pay it with the job you hope to get thanks to your education..
