where is Germany now in the living standard ranks? where is US?

So free education itself is not a bad thing at all, but I just don't know if the US is ready for it YET.
Germany doesn't send just any idiot to school do they?

What Germany has free college? shut the front door, what a backward nation, they should learn a few things from us, starting with how to make good cars.

We need more people like Yaleman Dubbya go saturate the ivy colleges!

I'm just in awe at how wonderfully giving Germany has been to those refugees. I'm sure they will greatly appreciate the generosity of Germany and pay it back by assimilating nicely.

Having an educated population is so dangerous......

I understand feeling of uneasy for folks who lack college education or have very average kids who's only advantage is parents ability to pay for kids to succeed with less competition out there.

Reality is the amenities offered at public institutions for current students would drastically drop or paid ala cart if they wanted to implement such a program.

Remember the "cost" is just like medical care. "Cash" paying folks pay way more then insurance(government) every would.

I have a relative who managed to take her school loan money and spend it on partying...didn't pay her tuition or her rent.

Her mom and dad paid off everything, including the loan.

They still give her money.

Amazing low information want everything "free" for them?

Also amazing how many graduate from prestigous LA schools 200K in the hole and cant get a job, then want a "rebate" from the taxpayer to cover their loans because it isnt fair!

I alway reply, go back to your prestigous LA school and ask for your money back? Those over paid professors are laughing at you !

Student loans and Pell Grants are welfare money for college professors!

A degree is a necessity to compete in todays job market, whether it be an academic degree or a vocational one. Not everyone's parents can afford to foot the bill for tuition.
A young person should not have to depend on their family's success in life. All that does is continue to keep the wealth in the hands of the currently wealthy.
In order for this to be a land of equal opportunity, money cannot be a factor. Yes, we can take loans out, but then we are in debt for most of our life.
If you keep the masses in debt, they will never rise above a paycheck to paycheck existence.
Significantly subsidizing higher education would definitely level the playing field in this country. A shift in the balance of power from the established oligarchy to the masses is truly the concern that the "ruling" class.
There are too many people that think that educational opportunity is a privilege and not a right. It is a shame that people think we should live in a dog eat dog society.

I know a few people who are FEELIN THE BERN. What's funny is, socialism and communism are generally about "us", "together" ... yet the youngest generation of socialists aka people who are FEELIN THE BERN have no concept of how their free stuff will affect others.

Anyway, this concept that people need a masters degree in butt-wiping to take care of themselves after they use the bathroom has to end. There are smart people. There are people that go to college. College doesn't make someone smart. And it shouldn't be required for half of the fields out there.

You mean in Germany all the Professors and school administrators work for free??

Oh their taxpayers foot the bill!

In California if you want everything free you must become an illegal alien and speak Spanish. Then you'll have "rights".

I went through college for my degree before student loans. I slept in an old VW bus and showered at the gym, went to class and worked full time except for football season where I played safety on the team. My scholarship was not a full ride like they are today. When I left school I was tired and hungry but I did not owe one dime to anyone.

Today students with those loans stay in very nice campus housing or in off campus apartments that students of our era would not have believed. They drive new or late model cars and pickup trucks and actually eat out at restaurants and pubs on a regular basis. I think college costs more today because the schools know the students can get big loans with just a signature. The very plan that some brilliant politician devised is exactly the plan that is sinking the ship.

No most people think you should live withing your means and earn your own way, I worked part time jobs in high school and 80 hrs a week during summers to put my way thru college. Mu parents had the audacity of owning a 900 SQ Ft home so I didnt qualify for any friggen low interst loans and got squat for financial aid! I could even go scrub pots and pans at school cafateria for work study!

So no, you want to go to school, get loans and pay for it yourself, society and the taxpayer owe you nothing! Dont do like my nieces and nephew just did, went to high $ LA school, got useless degrees and are 150-200K in the hole and cant get a job LOL. All three are lazy pampered kids are now in for a wake up call.

College is a choice. I went in the Navy to take advantage of the training and the GI bill. It worked for me. It won't work for some. Just like college won't work for everyone.

Part of the problem is they are requiring degrees for jobs that really don't need them.

The other part is college is not really about education anymore. It has become a money making machine. You only get out of it what you put into it.

I remember some of my friends going to college while I was in the Navy, they really spent a good portion of their time goofing off. I may have went that route, I am glad I didn't. The Navy really does teach you a large amount of responsibilty and accountability especially when you are a 19 year old taking a submarine to sea.

All that aside, I think they really need to revamp the whole process. Lower tuition, low intrest rate loans and more accountability for the students and colleges.

Problem I see with free is that there are going to be a lot of people who attend school that don't appreciate it and just end up getting pushed through so they can get a piece of paper.

So many things are referred to as free, when they really aren't. Almost in every case, if not in every case, when something is referred to as free, someone else is usually paying for it...

Good for you! You are an example of what being a strong, ambitious, and determined American is all about.

Excellent post! I only wish more Americans had this attitude. We'd be a much stronger nation...and with more character instead of a bunch of whining babies on a college campus.

To be fair to 97tbird....he didn't shy away from the fact that we should all pay MUCH higher taxes to fund this "free" tuition.

I honestly think many folks would not be satisfied until literally ALL of our earnings go straight to the government and proportioned out as it see's fit.

Fortunately all internet forums are far from a democracy where someone is elected. I in fact appointed myself using my own Despot qualities. I am the 3rd person to call out OP, not even the first. If you cannot follow the rules, then stop posting.

Mods, LOCK THIS THREAD.
