Your thought's on havoline!

Well I've been using 5w30 chevron supreme with lc20 for a while now and over the last few weeks I've been hearing a light tapping noise coming from my engine! So a couple days ago I went to sam's club and picked up some havoline 10w30 and switched out the oil and filter that same day, to my suprise the tapping is gone and my engine seem's to be running smoother with the havoline (no lc20).

Car is a 99' civic 1.6 vtec 100,000mi.

What's everyone's though's on the havoline?? Good, ok, crap!

I think if you look around a bit you'll see that most folks here view both Havoline and Chevron as two of the best (if there is such a thing as "best") conventional oils on the market today.

How many miles did you have on the 5w30 Chevron?
 
The joke's on you. I think Havoline and Chevron Supreme are identical oil in different packages. (Chevron-Texaco is the parent company).

Of course, you are using a slightly different grade now that is a little thicker at startup. Maybe your old oil had thinned out too much.

I'm thinking the lc20 was mabey thinning the oil out too much!
 
Havoline is a great dino oil, but with Honda Civics....pretty much any SL or SM rated dino oil will do just fine.

My wife's 1998 Civic EX has 135,000 miles and even with a cam seal leak, it only needs 1/2 a quart of make up oil every 4000 miles.

A voa is the only way to get to the bottom of it...Probably not a nickels difference and close enough to go either way based on production run variations...Same base oil though..Both excellent oils...
IMHO Chevron/Havoline oils are better than some synthetics...M1 being one of them.

Both are just excellent oils...If someone would've told me that a conventional oil like Chevron would withstand consumption better than M1 in my wife's Rodeo I wouldn't believe it...Until I tried it..Nearly 3,000 miles and I haven't had to add oil...I would've added nearly a quart of M1 by now.

If the Chevron was SL, it would have a different add pack than current Havoline. The current formulas if not the same, are close enough to not see a difference.

This quote came directly from Chevron. They aren't going to give out specific details about the add packs, any more than any other company will. But if they make both oils and they say they are different, then....
 
I have only heard positive comments about Tex. Havoline.Considered to be as good or better than any dino oil.
In fact I am currently using Mobil 1 in my 3.5 Intrepid and its not working. I have had to add 2 quarts in 3,000 miles for the first time ever.I was going for an extended drain.If it continues to 9,000 miles that will be 11.5 quarts of oil!(5.5 quart sump).Pep boy coupons used.Next time Havoline is on sale I am buying some for the Intrepid.
 
Something to remember about the whole 'more robust additive package'...

Oil blenders can meet API/ILSAC specs via two routes - better base oils or better additives or a combo of the two. You could have one oil with a 'better base oil' and another with a 'more robust additive pack', and both the oils deliver similar performance to meet the spec.
 
ahhh....well this brings out Valvoline All Climate which has a weak add pack, but perhaps they have a good base oil?

The only way the oil would show a noticable difference is if you had two different grades(which you do), or two ages of oil(which you might).

Either way I doubt Chevron was hurting your engine.
 
"Call centers" equate with marketing department interns reading from a script (which can change at the issuance of a memo). Some of 'em might even be based in the U.S. Read the product data sheets for the two "brands". Virtually identical.

Mabey it was the lc20 then!!
 
How do you know the engine was hurt? Noise does not equal damage. LC20 and chevron work great in my engine.
