No, I don't live in the ghetto but do have some friends and family that do and are nothing like what you describe. It's true such things do happen where they live but it is the only roof they can afford to put over their head.

Do ghettos have fences and guards around them like the imposed Jewish ghettos of eastern Europe during the war? I think not. I would say it is a VERY rare instance where a person is somehow physically unable to move out of it. It's more of a set choice or fear that keeps people from getting out of a hopeless place like that. One can climb out of such places IF one is willing to work VERY hard, remove themselves from family/friends that tend to trap them in ghettos, and just be willing to do whatever it takes to get out of there. I get so tired of this undercurrent of pity for people that DON'T improve themselves. Now IF said folks actually want to live in a ghetto....then that's fine and they have chosen a certain community path. But to act like the have no choice? Please!
As for this thread being hurtful toward those folks? Then they must have an issue with humor and truth mixed together with a bit of harmless comedic stereotyping.

Just like people who come from families of domestic violence and substance abuse tends to fall back into the habits when they grow up, it takes a lot of will power to break out of it. You can say individuals can and should do what is necessary, but in reality, just like everyone should and could follow the law, it is unrealistic to expect everything and everyone to follow through all the time. If it is that easy we would be in an utopia that needs no police, no lawyers, no politicians, no military, and communism would work!

So, you can "blame" the people in the ghetto, just like you can blame the military, the police, the lawyers, etc. It exists, increase and reduce in size due to economic condition, and cost of living, but there is always one around.

I bet you don't live in a ghetto. You are the TYPE that sterotypes these people. I can only Pray for you.
If you are so tired of it why don't you reach out and try to help?

No, I don't live in a ghetto. But I'll tell you, I've been in a few AND had a friend that used to live in one. Not a decent place to live.
So....I'm a TYPE that stereotypes folks? Ok, you can have that opinion. But please, save the prayers. You might want to ask yourself WHY you think I stereotype people based on what you read in my post....but that would involve individual thought and honesty.
You ask the most silly question of your post..."why don't I reach out and try to help?" You must be joking, right? Help whom? Most folks in ghettos have all the resources they need to pick themselves up and move away....except for the fact that altruists, such as I believe you are, have provided them with a victim mentality and bestowed upon them PITY. That is something they DON'T need. It's astounding to me that in practically the richest nation on earth....you (and other altruists) fail to realize that the more you 'help' people like that.....the more likely they will expect such 'help' and NEVER pick themselves up. And praying for me or for those in the ghetto does ZERO good (except providing you with the idea that you must be going to heaven because you pray for people). Most of those folks in the ghetto need a cultural change and self-examination of WHY they are WHERE they are.

Seems like both andrewg and BlueOvalFitter both have very polarized view of what is a ghetto and how to move out of it.

Nobody BUILD a ghetto by choice unless it is a government developed housing project. Most ghetto are places in a town that was de-industrialized or old with low home price (both rent and purchase). Gradually better off people move out and low / no income people move in and the process accelerate till there is no return. People move and sometimes bring the entire group of trouble maker with them and another group of honest low income people move in and fix the district or city. Harlem is an example, Oakland California is another (the trouble makers moved to Richmond and Stockton now), and a lot of them were buying homes with stable jobs too (except 1 or 2 of the family members are trouble makers while the rest are honest people).

Usually, it is a farmland turned massive residential district far away from jobs during housing bubble (i.e. 3 hours from job centers) that went bust in housing bubble collapse, and older neighborhood in industrial zone that has completely closed down with no jobs. These conditions create housing that are cheap but nobody wants to live there, sometimes people just walk away and homeless move in. You cannot eliminate it, because people are the problem and usually trouble makers will live where drug and alcohol demand is at, and that's usually at low income neighborhood. You can move it when there is another low income spot elsewhere and the ghetto is at a place that can be developed into a sub middle class neighborhood with honest immigrants and start up companies that take chances on the cheap real estates and provide good paying work. It takes decades.

Why are someone not moving out of the ghetto? Consider that some large cities have $2000 rent for 2 bedroom apartment in the middle class district and it is higher than 2 full time income of the low income jobs (i.e. McDonalds), a $1000 rent in the ghetto seems to be much more affordable.

First of all, I KNOW I am not going to Heaven; I broke Commandment #5 more then my fair share!
How do you not know each individuals story as to why they live in such meager ways? Are they disabled and can't find a decent non-ghetto place to live according to their income? Maybe they are not disabled but were left the house or property from a loved one and they OWN it and choose to live there. Where would you live if you were to become homeless?
No, you don't stereotype these people for their way of living. You do it because you CAN!
Yes, I agree there might be some that can get out and better themselves. And by helping, I meant donating items you don't need or want; clothes, food, linens, auto parts, etc.
Still, just know I do Pray every night before I go to sleep and people like you are in my Prayers all the time. It might not get me to Heaven but it still comforts me from my past Demons.

1. Heroine is available 24/7 but you won't find a supermarket.
2. When you hear gunfire, they aren't shooting at deer.
3. If you are white and a slob, you're assumed to be homeless.
4. If you're white and in decent shape wearing decent clothing, people will ask you if you're the police, if you're a repo man or if you're mob. I've been asked all three, including when I was once the latter.
5. Any store, gas station or hair salon is a ghost town after the first week of the month.
6. An alien would look at the stores in the area and assume that liquor was a staple food of these earth creatures.
7. The police are regarded as the enemy and they sometimes are.

There are police details at every grocery store just before midnight on the last day of every month to deal with the crowds waiting for the midnight recharging of EBT cards. (I wish I was making that up.)

Do you have a list for the ghetto's that are not like the ones on your list?
I live in a small town that is actually declared a village. Population is about 200. About 6 miles away is a small town with about 800-1000 population. About 75% of that population is elderly people 65 years and older. They live in houses that date back as far as 1860. Other bigger towns nearby describe this as a ghetto, yet on your list that describes a ghetto there is none of these things in this elderly ghetto.
I am sure someone might take this out of context and make an "elderly ghetto" list, which might be in good faith. But, I just can't seem to find one item from your list in this ghetto.

I have an EBT card. None of these things happen at the major stores I use my card at.

There are ghettos and there are ghettos.
The ones I'm thinking of are very much in the mold of the list I posted.
I've worked in one for the past seventeen years, so I didn't just make this up.

The definition of a ghetto is high crime rate, not low income.

The word 'ghetto' has many meanings. To be taken literally, look it up in Webster's. Taken in the context of this thread, it's basically a dumpy, low income, cesspool of a place often found in the inner-city. Crime is high and poverty abounds. I won't go into race....as this would be obvious in most cases.
A polarized view? Ok...you can have that opinion.

BlueOval.....it's a basically humorous thread. You are taking all this like some sort of crusade (pardon the pun). You need to sit back and get the joke of what people are saying here.

I am not on a crusade. I know these things are true about most ghetto's.
