I have a 2005 Dodge Neon SRT-4. Has the bigger, Mopar Stage 3 turbo as well as some other bolt on mods. Pump gas WHP is 360. Race gas WHP is 405. It is a DD and I'm going to be moving to a colder climate....from Las Vegas to St Louis. Seeing how St Louis can get into the "teens", what oil would you all recommend?

I was thinking of giving RL 0W-40 a shot, but I'm concerned it may be too thick, though RL claims it flows as well as a 5w30?

I doubt that the manual considers the fact that the original poster has modded up the engine to get 400 HP at the wheels.

I would try a synthetic 5w40 or 0w40

To summarize:

German Castrol Syntec 0w30
Rotella T6 5w40
Mobil 1 5w40 TDT
Mobil 1 0w40
Mobil 1 10w30EP
Then of course you have the Redline, Amsoil, Motul, Elf, Lubro Moly etc synthetics that will do also.

I asked the question to ascertain why a Xw40 would be considered "too thick".

A Redline oil of the grade specified in the manual might also do the trick.

Doubling the output doesn't always mean you need a thicker oil when a better oil works of the same grade works.

Calls for a 5w30 or 10w30 oil.

Somebody mentioned just using RL 5w30 or 10w30 instead of a 40w. Whats the idea behind this?

People recommend 5w40 oils because they are HDEO and generally considered tougher oils that a 5w30 or 10w30 oil. Redline is a very stout oil though and their 30 weight oils would stand up in a turbo.

Thats what I was thinking about using. Then I saw they made the 0W-40....

BTW- what is everybody generally recommending for OCIs with an oil like RL? For what it's worth, I also have deleted my stock oil cooler, and have fitted a 5.0 Mustang oil filter on the motor now. Probably 3 times the size of the stock filter.

Which is a very good oil too. Since your car specs 10w30 I would say you could use anything from German Castrol 0w30 (a thick 30 weight) on up to an HDEO 5w40, so yes 0w40 would be just fine. If you would want to stick with a good easy to find 30 wt for with the syntec 0w30 from autozone (check to make sure it says made in Germany).

To All,

My vote is for Amsoil ATM 10w30. It has a -54 pour point & low Noack Volatility #s.

Good luck,

no other mods to the oiling system? No DCR goodies? how often do you use those 400hp, and for how long.....lke are you taking the car on a roadcourse, dragracing, or just the occasional pull thru the rpms?

I recognize your name from other forums, but dont know much about your car or what you do with it.

I have the DCR top end oil modifier....that's it. Everything else is stock, as far as the oil system goes. The majority of my driving would be to/from work and definately no AutoX. I might hit the drag strip occasionally, but not much. I've already ran my car to the fastest it's going to go without tearing the motor down for a rebuild...

My previous car, a custom turbo Miata with 380RWHP did best on Mobil 1 15-50 and/or Mobil 1 20-50 Vtwin motorcycle oil. However, I am in South Florida, so oil temps were always a problem as was oil pressure. I went with 3000mi OCI's.

Over the 10 years I owned it, the engine was disassembled twice for non wear related issues. I was obviously doing something right, as the internals were always perfect.

I say M1 5-40 TDT. It's quite robust, plenty of ZDDP and commonly available. It's one of the finest oils mankind has ever made and the UOA results regularly put this oil on top.

Mobil 1 "high mileage" 10w30 is also a stout oil A3/B3/4 GF3 rated with higher ADDS. Full real synthetic -65f pour point. Its not a fuel economy/ low HTHS oil.
