We find these (circumstantial evidence) bottles from time to time in customers cars who think "oil is just oil" (they eventually fess up) and buy it because its cheap. Their engines didn't look any better and some were much worse...
The 97 Civic died at only 240k due to a lack of lubrication, which siezed the cam and then sheared the cam drive sprocket keyway. Take a look at the main bearing journal that spun its bearing. The head was really FUBAR but the picture didn't come out.
Only on a Honda which leads me to my question..if this really horrile oil took 240k for engine to seize...
Can a Honda use any API/SAE rated oil with impunity?
and what about if you use an exceptional oil? What then? Does it overperform?
I know the tolerance and clearances are so tight in my 2006 V6 that I get a performance and mileage boost from simply using lighter or better oils!!
Even when my tires wear out and there is less tread which means less weight, the car does better. I think honda='whatever' when it comes to oil as long as it's SAE/API certified.
Don't get too excited, we had engines from the 30's in our fleet of old woodies with 10's of thousands of hours on them running on generic non-detergent oil, as that's what they called for.
And we also don't know that this oil was run in this car for the entire 240K to my knowledge, I think we were still wondering whether this was just top-up oil or?
