Oh, snap! BITOG humor at it's finest.

Scrap iron can't be that hard to find. Most places can't seem to get rid of the stuff. At our shop we have a huge dumpster full of the stuff that just sits for months. Not surprised, as last time I checked it was only something like $130 per TON. That's a lot of work for not much money.

BTW my January 2008 issue of National Geographic tells me that in the USA only about 5 million tons of steel and iron get recycled annually, whereas 10 million tons end up in a landfill.

That price is usually the price for the scrap dealer to pick it up.

Don't see much scrap around here.

Got $20 for a holed M20 block, crank, pistons and holed sump. a few weeks ago (admittedly I delivered).

hi, thank you everyone for their respond and your jokes are much appreciated. i have been lurking this forum since it first started back in 2002 and i notice a lot of folks on here are from the heavy industrial. i thought these folks could help.

i'm looking for an exporter of heavy scrap metal. it would be impossible for me to go all over the place to pick up thousands of tons of steels. so if you could point me at a right direction, i appreciate it very much.

I've heard stories where whole junkyards were cleaned out for steel export to China. These stories made it uneasy for the guys that depend on inexpensive salvage parts to keep their cars running and classic car owners.

Yup. There are no diesel truck Junkyards left in Socal.

And real estate costs. It's more profitable to rent the land out or sell than keep scrap cars (according to one wrecker in Vancouver).
