He didn't cut them open, but he started testing these filters in Jan 2021 (link below), so he had to have bought them before then and I'd say the Ultra he used was the wire backed media design.

Sorry I'm late to the party, would it be possible to get some tests on K&N Gold oil filters (with the nut on top) to see exactly how they stack up to their competitors in the same price range? I haven't seen any meaningful data on their efficiency, at least from K&N themselves, and I have a hard...

The non-wire backed Ultra wasn't even for sale in Dec 2020.

This is from his bubble point video ... I can tell just by looking at the pink pleats that it's the wire backed Ultra.
