Would it be OK?

to use Lubro-Moly 10W-40 oil rated CF/SJ ACEA A3/B3-98 in a 2003 PSD for 3-5,000 mile OCI? If not straight, a blend of 50% of the LM and what?

I would not use SJ oil in post 2000 engines. You need SL or newer SM, SN.

Among other things, the soot control portion of the add-pack is not going to be nearly as robust as needed.

2003 is the changeover year for the Fords; you could get both the 7.3 and 6.0. Which one?

None of the above. You need a CI-4, or CI-4+, or CJ-4 diesel engine oil in that 2003 PowerStroke diesel.

Why Lubro-Moly? Any of the name brand oils will be great, especially for that short oil drain interval. If you're in love with moly, find a Schaeffer supplier, then run the oil many more miles--it'll still be good.

Hi dnewton,
I have enjoyed your posts since I've been on the board. I have a 7.3. I'd prefer to use up the LM 10W-40 all at once on a short OCI, but if necessary, I could blend. I really just want to use it up before it goes bad. I got it to use in the TDI, and the mower, but I won't use it up for four more years at the present rate.

I used to own one of the early 6.0s, an early '04 model with the late '03 engine. The owner's manual ok'd the use of ch-4 if a later api spec oil was not available at the time, FYI.

It's your choice, but I wouldn't use it.

That's a great old engine; don't use CF rated fluids. Use one of the newer ones.

I realize you're probably in a situation where you're trying to use up the oil, but that would be a life's lesson perhaps; buying more than you can consume.

If you're dead set on using the oil, I'd use it in really short OCIs, such as 2.5k miles. And even then, I think you still risk some issues such as soot/insoluble control.

Perhaps you could sell it, or even give it away, to someone with a more appropriate use?

I have a 1986 diesel that was spec'ed for CF and I wouldn't use it given all the better choices available. With a gun to my head, I might consider mixing it with some T5 Shell Rotella T5 10W40 CJ-4, which seems to be at all the Tractor Supply stores I've been in) but, really, can't you just use it in your VW TDI?

Pour 1qt of it into the tank at every fillup, put back the missing lubrication from ULSD. New oil like that would make for a perfect lube additive.

Being it has some detergents one may get a little bit of deposits on injector needles and valves/piston tops.

I personally wouldn't put it in the HEUI injected 7.3's fuel nor oil-those injectors are pretty finicky anyway, don't push your luck there. I would run it in an old IDI diesel like my '82 300D or '89 IDI 7.3, either in the fuel or as engine oil, but I would stick to CH-4 or newer in a Powerstroke-you don't want soot in the oil causing injector problems.
