Wonder why GM is having trouble?

One of their problems is poor thinking and design.

I was reading about the Hybrid version of the Malibu. It was reported that it only gets 2 mpg better than the regular version. What a waste of time, money and equipment.

You can quantify the fuel savings, now quantify the cost for that fuel savings.

In other words, how much extra does it ACTUALLY cost to produce the hybrid version of the Malibu vs. the regular one?

Only when you know that can you determine if it's really a waste of time, money, and equipment.

I had an '05 Chevy reg cab short wheel base V6 5 speed work truck.

This was a no options vehicle - only air, tilt wheel and AM/FM radio.

In 65,000 miles it took 3 intermediate steering shafts, noisy ground cables (frame to bed - lousy design) and half of the IP panel lghts went out.

Need I say more?

What's the issue? Lexus and others have similar hybrids... the point is big engine performance with small engine mileage, not necessarily huge mileage gains...

Judging by how most idiots just blindly mash the go pedal and race from stoplights, Id say that IS what they want.

It's actually a "mild" hybrid. Unlike the Prius and some other hybrids, it doesn't have the ability to run on electric alone - pretty much all it does is shut off the engine while idling and coasting.

Everyone is saying that the domestics are late to the table with Hybrids, however the only one that is really selling it the Prius. They quit making the Accord hybrid due to it's slow sales, the civic isn't a big seller and neither is the Camry hybrid.

The Malibu was an attempt to keep the cost premium of the hybrid version to a minimum.

Why is Ford doing well?

That might shed light on the answer.

A couple years back they unloaded Jaguar. They downsized. They have the Edge/Mustang and Fusion and Focus all of wich are selling very well.

They offer great service as I have seen myself.

GM and Chrysler have not read their market and thus the GM Marketing Director got his walking papers today when they should have been handed down 2 yrs ago.

GM needs to totally reorganize they are archaric in thought and practices.

Ford sent engineers to Japan 5 years ago...did GM?

Too bad the Malibu hybrid has the antique 4-speed automatic in it versus the standard Malibu's new 6-speed auto. That's definitely not helping the hybrid especially when you look at the fact that Consumer Reports has the hybrid almost a full second slower to 60 mph and over 1/2 a second slower in the 1/4 mile.

Give me a manual transmission non-hybrid version geared properly and driven for efficiency and it would cost less than either, outperform both down the strip AND embarrass the hybrid version in the MPG department, but most folks would never consider a manual transmission. What a shame.

Is about $ 1800.00 difference for 2 mpg and a more complicated design worth it? Hardly.

Get the Chevy Volt into production!

The GM 4T45E. It is the sole reason I got rid of my 2007 HHR. It had an intermittent problem that Chevrolet could not or maybe would not fix. I went up through the 1-800 customer service heirarchy and was not treated with much courtesy. I finally washed my hands of it and traded it.

Needless to say, GM lost me forever. And I was never anti-GM before, as a matter of fact I've owned quite a few of their products, and my family predominantly used to buy GM while I was growing up.

I'm not really anti-GM so much as I am simply not going to risk my hard earned money on another one of their products. I require value and reliability in exchange for my dollars.

The 4T45E is a transmission that rarely gives trouble.

I wish I could say the same about dealer service departments. If the bad part is obvious, they're very good at changing it, but if it involves diagnosis of any sort, all bets are off.

The Malibu has a lot to recommend it. Fuel economy, even in the "hybrid", is not one of them.

Still, if not looking for high economy, I would put it (and the Aura) on my short list. It's a great first step in the right direction for GM. A really nice car.

***??

No matter HOW a thread starts 'round here it always becomes a GM bashing thread about this or that [censored] GM car once owned. This one hit the record with the 3rd response starting the wave of "me twos"..

LMAO. Yet, based on my oil use data, GM is actually the biggest brand on the board.

The Saturn badge may be terminated shortly; Pontiac may be shrunk to one model; Buick is on life support; truck divisions may be merged. Any new GM product suffers horrendous value decimation due to the company's financial straits.

Studebakers/Ramblers/Packards didn't do so well in the resale market after those manufacturers folded. Of course they're worth a lot more today polished.

Buying a new GM//Chrysler//Ford is like putting a blowtorch to your money given the immediate cliff depreciation that occurs. It's expensive to support these patriotic badges. One has got to be willing to take more than one for the team.

now, you can see why your company is in financial trouble...

Since your post was in response to an unfavorable comment about the Malibu Hybrid...

A lot of us have owned GM products and a lot of us still do. I'm not going to pretend that I have a good opinion of GM the company just because the chickens have come home to roost.

Here's a question for you.

The Malibu Hybrid is:

a. An insignificant hybrid primarily intended to get cars with the words Hybrid and GM on them on the road.

b. Another GM "beta" release intended to use the buying public as guinea pigs.

c. A world class hybrid that demonstrates that GM "gets it" and can compete with Toyota in hybrids.

Please explain your answer.
