My Mazda protege 1.8L engine uses the WIX 51365. When I picked this filter up at the parts store, I could not belive how small it was. I looks like a motorcycle filter.

Anyway, I have done a bit of research looking for a bigger filter that meets the same specs, and I came across the WIX 51356. It looks to be the exact same filter except it its about 1" longer. Is there any reason not to use the longer filter? There is no clearance issues with my engine/filter. The filter is on the back side of the engine and does not come close to hitting anything. Is there any good reason to use the smaller filter?

The smaller filter on the 1.8 BP just means you'll spill less on removal. Mazda 2.5 v6 filters are a bit larger, probably the part number you list right there. Honda filters use that same thread as well.

exactly the same deal with Subaru 2.5l flat four, 2008.
stock filter is the tiny "toy" filter, supposedly will last 7500 miles, according to owners manual. i use the longer one: pureone
pl14610 = wix 51356. also bosch 3323 is a very good filter, which i will also use. since there is a larger surface area of filter, maximum flow will be faster. the price is the same, so i use the larger filter. also, because i use the big filter, and change it every 3000 instead of 7500, one filter will last 2 or 3 oil changes, so works out cheaper.

I use the longer 51356 on my V6 Altima, even though it calls for the shorter 51365. The beta ratio is better on the longer filter too. The 51656 is about as long a filter (~3.4" long) you will find for your car.

Use the longer one if you have the room for it to fit without contacting anything nearby.

I use the 51356 on my '03 Protege5 with the 2.0. I've run them for probably 50-60K miles without problem. Just check that the drainback valve is centered; I've rejected a few that looked wonky.

Well once again the Wix listing for Beta Ratio is not making sense to me. Not sure I'm trusting the Beta Ratios but the nominal is probably conservative based on river-rat's testing. Other than that use which ever you want. Diameter, gasket, flow, bypass all are the same and you have clearance for the length.

The 1334, 1356 and 1365 are interchangeable. They all have a 20mm thread and they're used on Honda/Kia/Nissan/Mazda, and maybe other vehicle applications. I've used a 1365 in place of a 1356 on my old Nissan and I've used a 1356 in place of the 1334 on my Acura. No problemo!
