I recently bought a filter cutter off amazon. Seems to work pretty well. I will definitely be cutting open more filters in the future, especially the Bosch D+ filters used on my mom and sister's Hondas for 10k OCIs.

Here is a Wix 51085 filter off my Jeep 4.0L. The filter had 4,000 miles on it with Pennzoil Yellow Bottle 5w30 oil. It seems to have held up well. I was getting some dry starts towards the end of the OCI, but the ADBV seemed fine.

why do vehicles start to get a dry tick start up near the end of the oil interval? Oil is suppose to be still good, filter is clean...why is it happening?

I paid $42 for the cutter if I remember correctly. Its worth it to me over hacking it open with a hacksaw and making a huge mess in the process. This cutter literally took 30 seconds, and it adjusts to the size of the filter.

Good to see you did not chew the filter cover off and used a cutter.

The only thing the cutter did not work on was a Bobcat hydraulic filter where the base goes up more than 1/2" from the bottom. Maybe a full inch. A $50+ filter not available at Walmart.

I sure do like the impressive sturdy construction on those Wix!

As always, thanks for cutting and posting!

That round space ship looking thing IS the bypass valve, and it goes on the base end hole in the center core.

That tool seems to be designed just to cut the filter as it has no cutting depth (from the base of the filter) adjustment at all. Also the depth is quite shallow.

Yeah, it's a filter cutter, nothing else.

Might be the lifters are draining! All startup noise is not directly connected to the oil condition.

I think it's time for me to invest in a nice cutter like that, too.

+1
Wix can easily do 10-15k in a clean engine.

I purchased the same cutter for about the same price from Summit Racing.
After about 35-40 opened filters you may be using your cutter for a hammer as I often do. They get dull and just bend the can after a while

This one will never wear out and if it ever gets dull, a new blade is available from Home Depot and low cost and easy to replace.

PS - they have a wide selection of blades for various metals, as well as for PVC

are these the "combo" valves that had the issue a while back?

No, the WIX shown above is just a bypass valve. WIX still uses a rubber or silicone ADBV. Orange silicone ADBV shown in post #1 photos.

A "combo" valve is a one piece rubber doohickey that acts as both an ADBV and a bypass valve. I stay away from any filter using a "combo valve".

Good, thanks I see it now. That picture looking down the center tube threw me off.

I'll start by admonishing the OP for underutilizing his oil filter. Only 4K miles! Tsk, tsk! A capital offense in some parts of the world! ( : < )

I have the same cutter bought from Summit long enough ago that it was only about $30. Worth the money to me!

Interestingly, last year when I did the Fram Proving grounds tour, I asked what they used to cut open filters... they showed me something like the pipe cutter linked above. And it looked as old as the hills!

Harbor Freight has a exhaust pipe cut off tool for $19.99, Item # 69327.

I use to cut open filters, works fine. (I use it on Subaru filters which are small).
