Amsoil Filters

Which filters besides Amsoil's (EaO) and FRAM's Extended Guard have wire backed synthetic media?

If WIX is making the filters for Amsoil, then why aren't the WIX having a full synthetic filter media like the filters they make for Amsoil?

I cut open a WIX 51040, and it had regular paper media.

Because that media is only licensed to Amsoil by Donaldson which is one of Amsoil's partners of which Wix is also.

If Wix wanted to use it, they would have to deal with Donaldson or design and patent their own media etc.

Wix has microglass and otherwise synthetic medias. I don't know if they actually produce the media ..nor whether or not they are paying license fees for those units that they offer glass media in. Heck, I don't even know if they manufacture the filter(s) at all ..but glass media is offered in their hydraulic line up ..and maybe in the OTR offerings.

I'm unaware whether or not they've offered glass media for any automotive filters. I don't recall any in my travels.

My speculation: Automotive filter offerings are probably the bread and butter of many filter manufacturers. Their industrial and OTR/heavy equipment offerings are probably their gravy. I gathered this from Donaldson ..in that they have virtually no consumer level distribution (aside from the niche Amsoil outlet- at least in N.A.) ..and surely have a heavy investment in the worldwide OTR and industrial end of their business. They appear to have the premier media (SYNTEQ/NANOFIBER) ..yet it is conspicuously absent in the vast majority of their automotive/small engine offerings. There's just not enough market to support the effort for any broad use. Amsoil has access to a niche market for such items, and Wix obviously has the manufacturing capacity to produce them for one customer.

Most bakeries break even on bread. It pays the bills. They make most of their profit on burger and dog buns and such.

Again, that's my speculation.

not a full syn...

I stand corrected.

Mike, so who would you say is making the (EaO) filter for Amsoil then, WIX or Donaldson?

Gary, does WIX make any automotive filters with the glass media?

I was looking at the FRAM vs AMSOIL thread and I must say: that (EaO) filter looks sweet!

Not that I'm aware of. I can't recall ever seeing anything other than "paper" or "cellulose" listed when looking at the automotive spec's via the site utility. I have seen it, on occasion, when doing comparative research on hydraulic/industrial filters that I see on ebay. I always see what Wix has in a like product.

Even the Audi/VW filter with 33 lb bypass (surely wire reinforced) is listed as "paper"

Fleetguard Stratapore's have the wire backing with the fuzzy synth media at least the LF16003.

As I understand, glass media has poor bend radius. It's brittle...it's glass. So I believe the wire backing is there to prevent a total breech by providing mechanical stability. I would like to hear from a filter designer on this.

The Fram's EG looks like they have this fuzzy media. I suspect the % of non-glass is low. There may be a good design reason for this component. They claim 70% more holding capacity but the micron rating is the same as the baseline filters (not like TG line).

Wix calls the good media "depth" from what I found. I did a search on Stratapore cross references but found mainly tractors. LOOK at Gary's numbers: 3 micron nominal and the Betas !!!

Any Fleetguard filter that has either a Stratapore label or synthetic media label has wire supported media.
