As a rule, is winter or summer harder on oil? I've had GC in my car for about 5500 miles, and my MPG has dropped a bit but it has been a lot colder here recently, didn't know if the two were related or if I should worry.

Depends on your climate.

In my climate, winter wins as the hardest on oil, hands down. The cold weather results in a lot of stress on the oil due to engine tolerances being all out of whack starting in extreme cold, which isn't helped when the oil is thick. Combine all that with never reaching as warm of an operating temparture and thus having a harder time cooking fuel and moisture out of the oil sets the stage for TBN depeletion...

My winter UOA's tend to show more shearing and much higher TBN depeltion rates than my summer UOA's.

Cold weather is harder on the oil because your engine runs richer for longer periods, so the possibility of fuel dilution is greater. Also, many areas use tons of road salt, so you'll get more sodium in your oil also. I've also noticed the TBN drops much faster for me on my UOAs during the cold months than it does in the summer.

I agree that cold weather is "harder" on oil than hot weather. I try to "plan" for one oil change late in the fall or early winter so I get the freshest oil for the winter.

Milage will drop drstically in winter. Especially when doing trips say less than 20 miles. The oil in cold weather will never get up to operating temp in that time. Even then it will not be as warm as in summer. Milage always takes a plunge in cold weather.

Thanks, load off my mind. Do any of you use any additives in the winter to help strengthen your oils and do I need to for extended ocis, of say 6k miles with the green stuff?

GC is good for 6K all on it's own. I might try LC if I wanted to go beyond that interval, but I don't for now.
