Like buffing a paint job to take away fine scratches, can the same be done on a windshield to take away the fine wiper scrathes? I figure it would have to be a special compound and maybe done with a different type of buff wheel.

You will need a dedicated glass polish: Diamondite I've read glass is very tough to polish. Autogeek has a dedicated Glass section with such products.

if scratchX worked on a windshield then it wasn't a scratch in the glass.
and if you can feel the scratch when running your fingernail across it then you won't be able to polish it out,
i bought a glass polishing kit and had limited success with it on windhshields mostly due to the scratches being too deep. cerium oxide was the compound that came with it. glass is very hard and any of the usual compounds for paint/clearcoat won't do anything but waste your time.
you can get small glass polishing kits that come with a buffing wheel that you use on a drill, it was years ago but i think i got mine from caswell. and fyi it's also been said although i have not done it that you can polish the [censored] out of it to the point where the scratch is gone but the resulting change in thickness off the glass in that area can also distort light.

I am sure there are cars with more expensive ones out there, but I haven't purchased a windshield yet for over $150 new and installed in my driveway. Once the sand sparkle gets bad enough, I just have a new one dropped in.

Guys always want to tinker, but I don't like to mess with glass.

1 FMF... I got the same kit from them that you got with about the same results. You also have to be careful to have water on the glass because it will get very hot as you statr to buff the area with the cerium oxcide. i did have luck taking out a very fine wiper scratch.... but it take a lot of time to do it...

Leave it alone....or get a new replacement.

If you polish it your still scratching the glass around it.....it might look clean and clear when your done , but you'll have glare when driving in direct sunlight, and at night from oncoming headlights.
Save your money and get new glass.

There are glass polishes of varying abrasiveness. Certainly the cerium oxide based polishes can remove enough glass to cause dishing. That makes polishing just one area of the glass a silly endevour. However, polishing the entire surface can make it nice and smooth.

I've found "No streek" glass/chrome/silver polish to do a very good job of cleaning dirty glass.

I've used 0000 steel wool on my windshield with detergent & water to remove road film, tree sap dots, bug left-overs, and wiper "tracks". While doubtfull it 'polishes' the glass as I was told, it does very well at cleaning it and making the wipers slide very smoothly.

My windshield is now 11 yrs old with many tiny rock chips, I don't think you could ever remove enough glass to get rid of them across the whole windshield. That would be A LOT of work.

Though it won't remove glass scratches,
