I figured wait until gas prices got outragous to find a good deal on a used 4 door truck/SUV from dealers and sellers.
We "need" a SUV or minivan, we could not afford/want to pay what they were asking a few years back and So this would probally the only time we could afford one.Im thinking that now is the time to buy.

Do you think prices on the gas hogs will get much lower over the summer? Should I hold out another year for a lower price due to gas prices?

Looking for a Suburban,Tahoe,Expedition,Pathfinder,etc..It wil be our "family Truckster" to dirve accross the country to take on vacations for the next 5-10 years and used about 1-2 times a week for family day.

Mileage is not so important I feel comfy owning something with 100k+ miles
Not looking to spend alot, Ive seen a few 2001 expeditions with under 100Kmiles go for $6000 on ebay.

My price range is $2500-$8000 depending on condition..If I am going to spend $8000 (top end) it needs to be late model with low miles..

Even if something had light body damage such as dents, minor collision, etc will work as I dont care abouit looks, i would be interested if priced accordingly.

Which models should I look for.I figure ones with low resales arlready would be good buys now.Which models have low resale?

All SUV's have lower resale right now. Dodge/Chrysler would have the worst.

The SUV's traded in now will have less invested in them than the one's already on car lots. But the dealer's realize they will have to take a loss on those they have invested too much money in. Better to take the loss now, it will only get worse.

Toyota probably has the best SUV resale value, although it won't be what it was before $4 gas.

Get a Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon/Expedition. They'll have the best value for your money to price ratio, in my opinion.

i was reading that right now at auctions Suburbans, Tahoes, etc are bringing $8k below KBB trade in. Dealers can't give them away.

actually, gas prices have gone down here the past few days by 6 cents. I just saw on CNN, Saudia Arabia is going to pump out more oil.

Maybe I just have no sense of style or vanity... but if money's been a problem affording SUVs to this point, what makes you think you're going to be able to now? I'd probably get a minivan if you're strapped for cash. They have the soccer mom stigma, so resale has been low on them for awhile, especially the Dodge/Chrysler offerings. Plus, they get much better gas mileage than a Yukon/Tahoe and can seat just as many people.

Hey, maybe I'm just *too* practical....

Trucks with open beds around me are holding their value pretty well; SUVs are slipping which is good for you.

Me too. I never saw the sense to an SUV...we had a minivan. I really think that SUV's were minivans for people who couldn't handle the "image" of driving a minivan. Don't get me wrong. If I lived "larger", then it really wouldn't matter to me how little sense it made ..but since I owned a minivan ..and it did all that I needed in terms of para-SUV utility ..why pay a premium for it

Around here, GM products have the best resale, with Dodge being the worst... but not much worse than Ford.

i have had suburbans and yukon xl's and of the four i have had one 1998, one 1999, one 2002 and one 2004 and they all got in the high fifteens to low sixteens for mpg's in town and the '98 got the same mileage as the 2002 and 2004 on the highway, in the low 19's as a high, the older two were much quieter than the newer two, and easier for my elderly folks and uncles to get in and out of.

i bought these last two as a way to haul my family up to visit an elderly aunt that is going to pass away from cancer, if i had it to do over again i would get mini vans, i prefer the larger suv to drive myself, but as far as getting others in and out of the car the mini van is the way to go in my oppinion

if you go with an other chev or gmc watch for the 3:42 gear ratio in the front and rear ends, i got much better mpg's with that one than the 3:73 and i liked the 42 gal fuel tank in the '98 and '99 compaired to the newer tank size of 33 gal. i could really cover some ground driving across country with the big fuel tanks

I'd have to really dehydrate to cover much ground without a rest stop or a relief tube. You just wait, young man
