I'm a part timer here and I've noticed/learned several things:

1) Most people who do UOA on here have ~5K on the oil
2) Most people do UOA on synthetics not conventional
3) Most people are DIY'ers who get satisfaction out of keeping their cars in tip-top shape and thus like to use
"the good stuff"
4) PU is marketed as an advanced cleaning oil, not an extended drain oil

All of the above make me think PU is perfect for most on this forum

This also makes me think that in actuality, a good conventional is all that is needed for the majority.

Hey, here I go again on my rant. Yep, I'm the clown who is against the idea of extended oci's. But I also believe there is way too much hype in synthetics. I would bargain to say that the majority on here who use them, do not need them at all. Like the opening stated, most people are changing at or around 5k and most any dino willd that. Bill In Utah has proven that a conventional oil will keep an engine perfectly clean. I wish more people would post UOA's on conventional oils and continue to prove there isn't much of a need for synthetic other than getting a psychosomatic effect.

I'm still laughing!!!

People have UOAs performed , but that does not mean they changed their oil at that time.
Many people simply send in samples they extract or drain to test the oil BEFORE the OCI is due.

Nah.

How about one sticky at the top:

Get the cheapest-a$$ oil you can find.
Match the number on your oil cap.
Follow the manual.
Don't buy a Fram oil filter.

Shut down the forums.

ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!! Not this [censored] again!!!!! Any DINO is good for most on this forum. Heck, ST dino will serve everyone well in 5k and even cheap ST syn will serve well. This PU frenzy on unproven oil is becoming frustrating. No wonder BITOG has it's own banner...

Better yet, my MC5k serves me just well and if ST syn didn't go up in price, that would be in my car RIGHT NOW.

in reading Amsoil's info on their site, they state that cylinder walls routinely get to 500deg F. http://www.synthetic-motor-oil-change-an...d-to-synthetic/

"Underhood temperatures also take a quantum leap with the use of power options, especially air conditioning, and because of emissions devices and emissions-related design. It is important to note that, even though the dash gauge may register only a 200 deg. F or so water/coolant temperature, the temperature of the sump and of all the assorted bearing surfaces significantly exceed the water temperature, and often surpass 500 deg. F on the piston ring and cylinder wall areas. These high-temperature surfaces serve to rapidly decompose petroleum oil and additives, as well as contribute to their shorter service life, while the synthetic is largely unaffected."

With that in mind I'm reconsidering my last statement. Maybe synthetics are better even for short OCIs
