Why is Castrol Edge so rare here?

Seems not many people here on BITOG use it, and I'm curious why. Any comparison between Edge HM and Maxlife Full Syn?

Where is "here"? Here meaning BITOG? Plenty of people use it here, IMO. I use it in 2 out of our 3 vehicles.

Castrol dropped in popularity when they fired the elves that made the magic GC and BC Castrol oils

Magic elves were replaced with intelligent molecules, and the latter just did not sound magical enough.

I think Castrol shot themselves in the foot by touting these intelligent molecules in their lower-end Magnatec offerings. It made top of the line Edge line somehow unintelligent?

True, but they still have the German made 0w40, which is what I'm running in my wife's BMW and is a great oil.

AFAIK, they shifted manufacturing to Belgium again.

Price. It's typically more expensive than the rest and for most users doesn't hold a certification that they require.

I still have a good amount of it stashed from when Autozone had it on clearance. Using 0w40, I already used up the 0w30, should have gotten more but at one point I thought I had enough and passed on a couple stores that had 30+ bottles of it...

I've used it interchangeably with Valvoline and supertech syns in the past. Works. The d1g2 add packs (what we can see in a voa anyway) for Valvoline syn and edge are VERY similar.

I happen to prefer the Valvoline bottle design, so I use that more often now. Silver and red are more my colors than black gold and green. Your selection process may differ, but it's probably just as effective as mine.

Likely.

I swore off BP after their spill in the Gulf

For years I swore off Exxon/Mobil because of the Exxon Valdez.

Castrol 0w40 is actually well liked here, has MB 229.5 and BMW LL-01 while Mobil 1 0w40 only has MB 229.5 and not LL-01.

It's not that it's more expensive, about the same price as Mobil 1, it's just that they never really have any rebates and Mobil 1 is cheaper once you factor in the $12 rebate that they have twice a year. But at the same price, I'd buy Castrol over Mobil. For me, I just need MB 229.5 so it doesn't matter what brand I buy.

Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum both offer cash rebates regularly. Castrol Edge rebates are usually just some sort of Castrol swag. Same reason I don't usually end up with Valvoline.

+1 better and the same price as M1. M1 0W40 used to be the bees knees here before they lost that cert, people still recommend it regularly. M1 and Edge are both on sale regularly for around $30 CAD here before rebates which are quite rare.

The reason it's not discussed as often is because Castrol doesn't sling rebates to the consumer like other major brands.

The prototypical BITOG poster will irrationally chase a $10 deal around town, then post about his stacked rebate score that he can add to his oil stash.

No Castrol rebates, fewer vapid threads...

I think Magnatec has been in the spotlight the last couple of years for good reason, the UOA's seem to always look great. Add the fact that it is now full Group III in all weights, is SN+, and is cheaper by about $5 per 5 quart jug, there isn't as much incentive to choose Edge over Magnatec right now. I've used Magnatec, Edge, and Edge EP for the past four years and it's been great, no issues what so ever.
