Why do YOU like oil so much??

For me personally, I used to skateboard as a kid. Bearings get really dirty and make that coarse grinding sound. After blasting them clean with solvent, a shot of heavy oil makes them quiet and smooth.

I had sealed bearings on my skateboard.

Oil changes are the most fundamental of vehicle maintanence procedures.

For me it is usually the starting point to begin examination and study for further maintanence.

I've always formed unnatural attachments to most of my cars, and I put a huge amount of miles on commuting to work, so I've always been a little more careful and worried about maintenance than most of my friends and family. I've checked in here several times for the past couple of years when I needed to look something up, and would always force myself to stop reading after a while, only because I could see myself becoming obsessed. This time, I stayed too long...I set up a userid! I ordered my first sample kit from Blackstone! I ordered an oil extractor! I'm deliberately driving out of my way so I can hurry up and get some miles on my current fill!

I...have...begun...a...hoard....

Why do I like oil so much? Because the 'ride' from dino..to..blends..to full synthetic can be so sweet and the decisions can have such lasting ramifications especially if you have a performance-oriented type engine. one wrong turn or slip-up and youre toast and thats pretty exciting..and it's like a movie but you star in it.

oh and when you car starts to 'beat' cars in movies, that's pretty exciting, no?? but sadly it doesn't happen everyday and that's probably good because street racing is not safe...

My girlfriend and I had the exact same conversation the other day, she was making fun of my oil obsession.

I think my oil changing obsession started when chain places like Vavoline and Castrol, went to 29.99 for a basic oil change. This is about the same time that walmarts sprouted up here, and oil and a filter could be had for about 7 bucks total.

This is when I turned to the internet to research what oil was best, and came across BITOG.

Now, every time I step into a walmart, the misses just rolls her eyes when I say I'm going to the oil aisle just to look around. And thats what I'll do, just walk around and check inventory on stuff I buy, and stuff I might buy.

Then I'll go directly to the lawn equipment, and look for honda powered mowers, even though I do not have a lawn to mow.

My non oil buddys laugh at me for putting ST oil and filters in the girlfriends car (dodge neon), and I would simply remind them that they have absolutely no clue.

There is something somewhat enjoyable about being outside on a warm day, just changing oil in your cars. Its somewhat relaxing, and gives you a good sense of accomplishment for the day.

Because I get left alone in the garage. Changing oil could take hours, especially when there's a good game on.....football, baseball, baketball...... Heck a good oil change should take at least an hour or so...right?

If I could answer that, I could explain it to my wife! I have always been obsessed with oil. I can remember being 6 and having Mom pay for a quart of Royal Triton because it was purple, for my mini-bike. I moved up to a Harley-Davidson 90 and ran a synthetic 2 stroke oil called TC Red. Dad always ran Valvoline, Pop (Gramps) always ran Pennz.I have been changing oil since I was a kid, and it only got worse. I have tech books on petroleum, history books on the local refinery, (originally Shell, now P66-Conoco), and my daily high speed hook to BITOG. I currently have M1 in the Envoy, Delo 30 weight in my Rendezvous, have some GC for sale, and bought a case of Schaeffer's today in STL. I've got it bad, and it is Oh So Good... BUT, there are others more obsessed than me. The guy that developed the cracking procedure for crude patented the operation, calling it "Dubbs Cracked". He named his kid C.P. Dubbs, for Carbon Petroleum Dubbs. He probably whizzed on my family tree....

Because it’s a life giving nectar! Ok not for humans, but for machinery.

It’s the elixir that keeps the world turning around! Well yah that’s pretty much true…….

It’s cause I’m just plain crazy. It’s a sickness and an affliction. Could it be considered a vice?

What I found as the most fascinating article was the Popular Mechanics article on synthetics in 1976. I read it a couple years or so after it first came out.
This is when I first started getting into cars.

Then I bought an Oberg mesh screen filter and started using Mobil 1, about 6 or seven years later. I also bought an Amsoil oiled foam air filter from Leonard Pearson one of the bigger Amsoil dealers in the Northwest. He tried to sell me oil at the time but I declined.

I now wish that I had started using Amsoil at that time, about 1985. So I used Mobil 1 and started experimenting with using synthetics in my as well as my Mom and Dads Vehicles.
In 1995 I wanted to try synthetic air compressor oil but could not find it anywhere. I bought some from the guy who then signed me up as a dealer. I could not resist trying out some other products as well.

I was hooked, and then I found this site and could finally come out of the closet so to speak.

Tonight after midnight when they take this board down for maintenance. What else what we have to do then?

Back to counting my oil and filters again...

It`s a trip,I used to get on the various Z forums several times a day,a couple of DSM forums, and sometimes Infinity forums. I`d always be on the search for oil discussions. Now that I found BITOG,I hardly ever visit those forums anymore.

Oil rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can totally relate to that! I remember being a kid and my sister and I having a skateboard each. Back then they were clear/colored plastic of some kind (early-mid 70`s) and had open bearing urethane wheels. I always tinkered around with things as a kid and always took stuff apart. I loaded her bearings up with WD40,took it out for a test drive, and that stuff turned the bearings into powder! Completely destroyed them! So I thought, hmmmmm,I`ll try some thicker 3-in-1 oil my dad had and put it in mine. Ran silent as a whisper! Then a friend of mine and I found this tube of stuff called "Motor Lube" in this vacant lot. I started putting that stuff in my skateboard and bike bearings. Man that stuff made them roll smooooooooooth!!!!!!!

Good times,huh!
