Why do folks seem to love Michelin?

My wife has a 2006 Pilot that is due to new tires soon. I do not like the GY Integrity tires that came stock on her Pilot. I am leaning towards the Michelin CT SUV offering, but have considered other brands. My friends, and other folks that I consider to be "In the know" tell me that Michelin tires are the best. I have heard many, many stories about Michelin tires having great service life relative to other brands.

Is all of the hype concerning Michelin tires true?

They do make very good tires and I have used them on several cars, vans, and suv's that I have owned. I also like the offering from Bridgestone.

I used Michelins on my wife's (now sold) Expedition. - Loved them!

Have Michelins on my wife's Mercedes SUV - Love them

Have Michelins on my GTI - Best tires I've ever owned!!!

They are expensive for a good reason, IMO.

On our RX, Michelin's came from the factory, very nice ride, but no treadwear warranty made them an expensive replacement choice.

If I could make a suggestion, take a look at the reviews on tirerack.com, more specifically the Bridgestone Dueller H/L Alenza. The tire has a 65,000 mile warranty and is an excellent tire.

YMMV.

The Bridgestone Dueller H/L does seem to have slightly better specs and customer reviews than the Michelin SUV CT on Tirerack.com. Both of these tires seem to be in the $135-$145 range, so they are competitive from a cost standpoint. Do you feel that the Bridgestone tire will provide a decent ride and outlast, or at least have an equal service life, to the one from Michelin?

I didn't like the Michelin LTX A/S that came on the truck as the tires were kind of slick in the rain, and while ok in snow that wasn't too deep they were worthless on frost, much less ice. Michelin advertised them as being quiet, obviously something really important on a 3/4 ton diesel, and like a number of popular Michelins they seem to trade off traction for tire life. Michelin has a new A/T that I'll look at when it's time replace the Goodyear Silent Armors, as although they've been good tires I don't have any brand loyalty, I only care what works best at the best price for the requirements that I have.

I do like the Michelin Harmonys on the Taurus as the traction requirements a lot more modest, and the tires do well in the rain, on snow and frost, and wear well. The Harmonys have done better than the Toyos, Contis, and BFGs that we've used, and they'll be a first consideration when looking for more.

Probably the same reason people like Toyota and Honda vehicles.

i always noticed that too. on my mustang they tended to need less than 1oz of weight per wheel.

Had the Michelin Hydro-Edge and believe the hype. The tires are great. Quiet, lots of traction, and the obvious hydroplaning resistance. Price is a little high on them, but I recommend them. I have heard good things about the GY Tripledges (sp?).

I had Michelin XC-LT 4's on a lifted Nissan pickup a few years ago, and they lasted forever.

After 2 sets of Michelins on my wifes RX330 (neither made it to 32K) I went with the Dueler Alenzas and ran them 55k which was a good tire but became noisy in the last 1/3 of their treadlife. I am now running some Kumho's and they are really impressive. The Michelins while nice tires just didn't last for the $$.

never had any michelins car tires I didn't like.
but I never had the cheaper grades, always mid to high end lines.

never had any problems with them, they rode smooth and quiet, never warped or went out a round.

grip was good to excellent

on the bad side, they never seemed to go as many miles as they should have thou

Doesn't Michelin make a "pilot" ?? ....
... seems like a natural for a PILOT

I think Michelin's are some of the best tires made. To me their problem is their price. Comparable tires can normally be had for less.

That is certainly the knock on them and is why I just don't run them right now. I like and have had great luck with them, but Michelin is very proud of their tires and the price does reflect that.

Yes, they do; I have those on my GTI. Here are a few pictures of the Michelins I've used:

The GTI - Michelin Pilot Exalto

The (sold) Expedition - X Radial LT

The Mercedes - Michelin Cross Terrain (My wife like to scrub curbs with them)

In my mind they absolute make the most consistently round and even tires made. They have the least Road Force Variation and require the least amount of weight to dynamically balance on average to boot. The traction and wear are usually excellent but then there is the price. Yup them are a bit on expensive side but if you can comfortably afford them by all means. They are excellent. Some of us have to compromise a bit.

Their windshield wipers suck though!!! LOL.

Guess I am the only one who doesn't care much for Michelin. Had a 2001 Olds Aurora 4.0 that came with them. Awful tires that were even a part of a TSB from the factory. Ended up with Goodyears at the 20k mark and immediately noticable differences.

I may have just gotten a bad set right from the start.
