We have a few clearly Toyota/ Imported biased folks here, and a few who are obviously Ford/Domestic biased.

It is clear to me that try as they may, they are not going to change each other's mind, yet the debate goes on and on.

I paid good money for my car. If anything, I feel that they owe me one for giving them the biz. I do not owe them free advertising and defense of their reputation.

Cars are consumer products and not sports teams. Why do folks become fans of their brands is beyond me.

The marketing folks have really brain-washed you, no?

Does anyone want to start a fan club for my microwave oven?

JonnyZ- Just curious: Are you a man or a woman?

Men love machines....that is all.

By the way, I love my Samsung Microwave oven, Briggs and Stratton Lawn mower, Synthetic oil, Kenmore washing machine, Samsung big screen TV and of course, my Hyundai.

The marketing is part of the fun; it makes us excited of a new product.

Only a Toyota person would not understand why people become fans of "their" brands.....

I design machines, work on machines, obsessively maintain machines, so you may say I love machines. I do not care for the brand of the machine.

I could easily be obsessively maintaining a Ford today. I just so happened to have made the choice to buy a Toyota all those years ago. Never had the need to justify the choice to anyone else, left along promoting the brand.

Consider today's rebranding practices and complex brand ownership structures, brand loyalty is really a moot point, no?

Good analogy -- Automobiles are just mechanical appliances like a microwave. Some are well-made and some are junk. Some last longer than others, but they all will eventually wear out or become dated.

+1 on why people are so obsessed about the vehicle they currently own.

By the way I just looked, my built in fancy microwave oven (came built into the house), is a Whirlpool. Never noticed before, or cared. Did not keep me from using it and cleaning it off every other week.

I think you have a good point. When purchasing a car I look at features I need in a price range I can afford. Brand is a consideration, but secondary. Microwaves are not different.

Your car is the second biggest investment you make, other than your house. Over your lifetime, you may possibly spend more on cars than your house. Example: I paid 90K for my house in 1998 (just paid it off last year). In the past 2 years my wife bought a new Malibu (21K) and I bought a new Colorado ext cab (17K). That's 38K just for those cars. That's a lot of money leaving the country, never to come back if I would have bought imports. I feel it's anti-American to willingly send your hard earned American dollars to a foreign country knowing full well what free trade and the deficit has done to us. I'm not buying the "imports are superior products" [censored] either, as I've had very good service with GM over the past 30 years. When you go to buy parts for an import, expect to send even more money overseas, where it could be better used here. Not to mention import parts are always more expensive. In the case of German parts, up to 10X more. We all (well, most of us on this board) live and work in the USA, don't we?

I agree. I think there are a number of people who wrap themselves up in a "brand". It does make for some comical posts when someone's brand gets insulted-sort of like a bunch of little roosters puffing out their chests trying to prove they're at the top of the roost.

I think it is natural to defend one's choices. Some people are insecure if others make different ones. There is also the matter of astro turf. I am afraid many on the internet are more than the satisfied customer they claim to be.

Even more pathetic than defending your brand is attacking others.

If defending is a sign of insecurity, what does that make of all those who have to attack other brands?

Now THAT'S the real sign of insecurity.

Not exactly on topic, but you get the picture.

It's classic psychology. There are a certain petcentage of people that feel the need to defend products they use. It doesn't matter if the product is great, or if it is garbage. To admit one wasted resources and got an inferior product is hard for some people. Just look at K&N owners in the filter forum.

How many people bought Yugos, Renault Le Cars, and 80's Cadillacs, and told whomever would listen how great their car was?
