I already posted this in the Amsoil engine hoax thread, but thought some may not read it there....

Okay, I have a story that sounds too good to be true, and it is one of the reasons that I am now an Amsoil dealer.....

A couple of years back, when Amsoil just released, or I just realized that they had Amsoil European formula 5w40, I started running it in my 2000 VR6 VW Jetta. It was in the motor, and I took it to Checkered Flag Auto Service, in Grove City, OH to get the oil changed. It is now Mobil Lube Express, go figure. Anyway, I paid them to put Amsoil in my car, and I had it changed out at my regular 5k OCI. (keep in mind, this was pre-BITOG, and I was just lazy on changing my own oil.) Anyway, I went to get it changed and about a mile after I left, my check engine light came on, and my oil light came on and started beeping, it may have been on and I didn't see it, but it starts beeping after a minute or something. The car was running fine, and I knew immediately that they had drained the oil, and not replaced it. It had Amsoil in it before this, and they were supposed to have put it back in again, but some idiot there didn't do it. So, I drove the car back to them, and I drove it as hard as I could and it was running just fine. I was hoping it would blow up and they would owe me a motor for their mistake. They agreed as soon as I got there that they had forgot, and the Amsoil quarts were still sitting on the ground. I got a police report, and took it to VW to get it inspected. They tore the motor apart, and found no problems at all, they only replaced the seals that they had to. Checkered Flag covered the bill immediately, and all was well. So, I think that this is possible on a short mileage basis. As for me, I trust Amsoil products because of this. What would have happened if I had some GIII oil in there? Who knows, but Amsoil did good for me. I no longer have the car, and it was running like a champ 30k miles after that, no leaks, no noise, even the timing chain didn't rattle.

I think this motor was probably prelubed prior to every single start without any oil. I think it is the only way it is possible, but I think it is possible.

As for the engine in the fair display on the other Amsoil post. I was in no way saying that this guy is anything but crazy in his selling technique. I was just implying that it may be a little slight of hand to make it possible. I would be shyed away from Amsoil by a person like this if I didn't already like their products. It reminds me of the infomercials on tv for KaBlam or OXXXyclean and the like.

I should have named this post something else.

Cooper,

What a genius! Do Amsoil a favor and don't tell anyone you're a dealer.

You have a warning light and tone that indicates low or no oil pressure. You immediately deduce no oil in the crankcase, so, being the obviously reasonable and prudent person that you are, you proceed to drive the car as hard as you can in hopes of throwing a rod or something similarly terminal. Per chance, did the police report mention anything about criminal culpability on your part? It should have.

I guess explaining to you how most of us would have stopped the car (and the engine), had it flatbedded to the Lube Joint to have the oil added, then had the Lube Joint pay for a dealer inspection and resultant damage, if any, would fall on deaf ears.

The police took a report because a quick lube place forgot to put oil in your car? Must of been a slow day in Grove City, Ohio...

This doesn't ring true. A police report? I have never seen a police department which would come take a report about the failure to refill a crankcase. Such would be a matter of civil negligence and not a criminal matter. The police only get involved in crimes.

Yeah. . I gotta throw the ---- flag on this guy. Been in police work for 25+ years. No police department would take a report in a civil matter like this (because the cops could end up testifying in civil court instead of being on the streets where they belong). LEOs never get involved in civil matters because, well, they have no jurisdiction in these issues. . . my advice to this guy is to NEVER tell this story to his potential customers.

Why am I thinking of the "Amsoil blew up the engine in my Pontiac GXP after 11k miles" thread that mysteriously disappeared a few days ago???

Coincidence? Or just a slow week in Ohio?

The truth is that having no oil in the crankcase for 1 mile is not enough to kill most engines, regardless of the type of oil previously used. I know, I've run an engine to see how long it took to die without oil-on purpose. After 2-3 miles it seized. After I added oil back in, and let it cool off, it started up again. I drove it for 5 miles after that and then tore the engine down for a performance rebuild.

I also seem to recall some kind of high school competition wherein two high schools build a motor each, then run them to failure at full throttle. If they don't die in a certain period of time they drain all the oil and run them again. I seem to recall them running quite a while without oil. While I wouldn't recommend this for engine longevity, a brief run (couple minutes) due to some kind of error like this should be O.K. however if any damage was done it would have likely been caused by the running "hard" after knowing there was no oil in the engine. I personally would have shut the engine down after a safe pull-off area was located and then had the shop tow it in.

No, some people who think stories like this will help Amsoil sales.

For some, it will prove that Amsoil needs more salesman like Pablo and Gary who tell it like it is (no stories).

If you want to try Amsoil they are here to help, if you like it they would love for you to buy your Amsoil from them.

No hard sales. No stories.

*if* they post something like a "customer comment" they disclose that up front.

For others, stories like this make sure that they never try/buy Amsoil.

This web site started out with members posting and sharing facts.

Sadly, its become a this oil type/brand is the only choice and if you use anything else than what they use, your engine is/will be damaged. All without any data.

I wonder if those outside the auto repair business understand (or care) that people, including managers, lose jobs due to replacing engines because of oil outs. The reason that oil outs happen in our business is two fold. One, non technical people are doing oil changes at fast lubes due to low pay. Certified techs due not work for the wages these companies pay to change oil. 2nd, customers are becoming more and more demanding, wanting oil changes done in record time. Customers two most asked questions when coming in for an oil change are "how much", and "how fast". Customers are wanting to pay less and less for an oil change, and thus, margins are reduced to the point that non technical people are changing oil. And the "how fast" is leading to vehicles being worked on to fast to provide a margin of safety.

So keep in mind your little scam, to get a new engine could have cost someone their job (and their means to support their family), but then I doubt you really care. I know that from my experience with the buying public, most really could give a darn...

Also, many companies are getting smarter. For example if you have an engine damaged at my repair facility, you get the same as what you came in with. For example, an engine with 125,000 miles is damaged due to an oil out, I will find a junk yard motor with the same mileage and drop it in. No rebuilt motor for you.

This is why I NEVER rush my mechanic when my car is in for service. I tell them to take as long as they need to to get the job done. I also don't nickle and dime them. If you are a good customer, they do the little things for you.

As for the topic of this thread, I recently met Cooper when I bought some oil from him. He seems like a good guy....works as a paramedic and seems like a good dad to the 15 month old kid he had with him. And he does know quite a bit about oil so I don't think he's a troll. It probably all just came out wrong, I dunno.

Well, as I have stated before, the header for this post was incorrect, I should have made it something else. I didn't think about it before I posted, and am sorry for that.

I am definetely not trolling. This is my actual experience with the Jetta that I had. The Grove City Police department did come out and take a report from this situation. I did drive the car back to the lube joint, and was that right? I don't think so, but I am just stating what happened. Did I make a mistake, yes. Am I making up somthing, no. The public record of this incident is available to you if you wish. Also, call the place it happened if you like, this is now Mobil Lube Express in Grove City, which was Checkered Flag Auto Service at the time. I am sure they remember me, give them a call if you like. I am only stating my actual situation that happened to me. This is a factual story, and I am not trying to sell anything to anyone, as a matter of FACT, I have been an Amsoil dealer for about two weeks, and have not sold anything to anyone yet from Amsoil. I just like there products, and like the extended OCI that I may get. I don't have a website, and I don't even promote them more than any other oil.

So, what is BITOG for? Can I not tell an actual true story without being called a liar, or someone smearing my name on here? Did I mispeak on the situation? Did I write something that I should not have written? I probably could have said things a little differently, but I wrote what really happened to me. Was anything wrong with my car because of this? NO.

When this happened, I called Checkered Flag, told them what had happened, and the management there stated to drive the car back, and that it would be fine. So I did. I figured it would be their loss since they advised it and they are the ones that left the oil out of the crankcase of my car. Do I use anyone to change the oil in my car anymore, NO! I do all of the maintainance on my vehicles, and the only reason I used them then, is because I couldn't buy an 5w40 oil anywhere yet that had 502 VW specs except the dealer with wanted way more than it was worth...like $9 a quart. You couldn't buy it at any parts stores yet.

Well, it is on record, you can find it if you like. It is no different than you calling the police for a dog barking, they will come out for anything if you ask them to. I just wanted an official record of it, if they refused to admit that they didn't refill the crankcase. I am sure a lot of others would do the same, it gives you peace of mind to know that it is recorded and admitted that it happened, otherwise it is your word against theirs.

new subject: AMSOIL DEALER CAUGHT RED HANDED

Would you say the same think if I wasn't an Amsoil dealer? As I have stated before, I am an Amsoil Dealer, but haven't sold anything yet. I have only been for about two weeks. This situation that happened to me is one of the reasons that I am an Amsoil dealer. Just one of my personal reasons, you don't have to agree. It is not a made up story, thanks.

Well, since you are in police work, then you know that if I called your dispatch, said that I paid for a service, and that service was not rendered causing possible loss or damage to a car, and your dispatch dispatched you there, you would go. Would you not? What would you do? Well, the cop that came out took my statement, and the statement of the owner at the time, and made a record of it. Gave me a number that I could call the Grove City PD and get the record anytime I needed. Did he say it was a criminal offense, no. Did he say it was recorded for future use if I needed it in small claims court? Yes.

Well, that car is getting fixed right now under manufacturer warranty, that was not my posting, but a friend of mine that originally sold me on using Amsoil. He was using Amsoil for a long time and believed in it, and I believe he was looking for someone to blame for his motor throwing a rod. It was a manufacturer defect on that specific motor, and it is being repaired by Pontiac.

Man, a troll with 438 posts!

You must have A LOT of time on your hands schmuck!

Nice. Do you feel you love oil more than me? What makes you call me a schmuck, or a troll? I was only stating an actual factual situation that happened. Do you think I am trying to sell you something? What makes you call me a troll? Did I say something that wasn't factual? I don't appriciate being called names.

I wonder what our Amsoil rep's say about this...fact or fiction? I trust their word over anyone else anyday.

Well, it is a factual story, I must have just wrote it wrong. It is a factual event that happened to me before I was ever into oil like I am now.

Scam? Was it a scam to drive back to the oil place, after they had left the oil out of my car. They had told me to do so. Was I upset that I had driven my car without oil, yes. I had thought the damage was already done. So, I was upset. Was there anything wrong with my car, no. I was happy there wasn't, I didn't want to go through all of the process of getting my car fixed. But, if it was already damage, I wanted to get it fixed, and I didn't want it to show up thousands of miles down the road. I never was in the intention of scamming anyone. They made a mistake, and I wanted to make sure they corrected that mistake.

Well, I guess I deserve some of the flames here, but it really is a true story. It doesn't matter what brand oil that it was, or what the story was, some people will never believe stuff like this. As for me, I hated that it happened, and now I hate that I posted it.

I am really an oil enthusiest, and I love this board for the most part. I have met some of you and everyone has seemed like great people. I have loved learning about oils and car maintainance. It is probably my favorite hobby. I knew nothing then like I know now about oil.

This just shows me that everything here is critiqued to every letter of every post.

I am sorry some of you don't believe what I had to say. I am even sorry I posted it.

Will I be on BITOG anymore, probably not. This is not worth it. I can get enough critique at home.

Relax, Cooper. Anyone who hangs it out there is going to get some swipes taken at them. Just goes with the turf.

Broad spectrum of members here. Everyone from "hang 'em high" ..to "let the poor disadvantaged victim of circumstance go". They'll tell you you're a low life ..or a champion depending on their POV.

That's all part of playing hardball with the big boyz
