Got about 8-10 gallons of old automatic transmission fluid that needs to be taken to recycler. Advance Auto, where I take my used oil, doesn't do transmission fluid. Anybody know where I can take this.

I just merge it with my PSF, engine oil, gear oil.......
If they ask why its red, tell 'em redline.

Most used oil finds its way to some oil burning steam plant.

You can also visit a transmission shop or quicklube. They should be able to recycle it for you.

Its all oil in the end isn't it? I mean, obviously transmission fluid has some other additives, but I assume they would filter them out somehow and get to the base oils.

I mean, they already mix a million different brands/weights/compositions of oils in just accepting motor oil. Is adding a little transmission fluid going to make a difference?

If they ask you whats in it, say oil? Its the truth lol.

You could try your recycling center. I have dropped off used oil at my local municipality garage.

The guy at my local Kragen said they take everything, as long as it'll mix with oil.

They should take if they take used oil. It goes in the same barrel everywhere I've ever taken it.

10 gallons may be the problem. Most stores operate on a 5 gallon limit to keep out the mechanics. Your local solid waste department or Wal-mart will probably take it.

I've read online that it varies by greatly, as each locale has certain requirements that waste oil must abide by. It also depends on what the used oil will be used for after recovery. Anyone who collects or sells waste oil has to abide by their local laws, hence the difference in collection rules.

I found that ATF burns great with the #2 fuel oil for my home and shop oil furnaces, along with other relatively lightweight and clean oils. The drain oil goes in a separate 275 gal fuel oil tank that gets pumped out when nearly full. I even take friends drain oil since the recyclers pay me good money to come and pump it out right at my place. I stopped giving away my drain oil years ago- too valuable a resource. I wish now I would have invested in a true drain-oil heater for the shop. I can't see why anyone would turn away used ATF. They can get good money for it!

I was once told the price of used oil would fluctuate with the market. When petroleum prices were low, you'd have to pay to have the used oil removed. When petroleum prices were high, they'd pay you.

At our place of work, they say we have to pay to have the used oil removed (by Safety-Kleen). This doesn't make sense with today's petroleum prices.

SafetyKleen is big business. They'll charge you either way to make more money for themselves. Watch them monopolize when noone is looking.

If anyone is paying to have oil removed, you need to research the yellow pages for competitors.
