Can anyone shed light on who makes this filter? Is it any good? Seems well made, and made in USA.

-Engineered to deliver superior performance - Micron Rating: 99% Efficiency at 5 Microns*
-Full Synthetic filtration media made in the USA
-Chrome - 10 steps of progressive plating process to achieve superior chrome finish
-Silicon gasket and anti-drain-back valve for meticulous performance and longevity
-Replaces Harley-Davidson's SuperPremium5, Fits '99-later Twin Cam and Evolution. models (except '08-later XR models)

Cannot say who actually manufacturers their products as they say:
"PGI is ranked as a pioneer in establishing partnerships and alliances with leading manufacturers in Korea, Taiwan, China, Indonesia Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia.

Harley, or at least the older ones before the water cooled heads, only filter the oil going back to the sump. There is no filter other than a screen on oil going back to the engine.

The filter has to have specific flow ratings, and a micron rating, and different engines have different filters. There were 2 I think. Too much flow restriction in the filter is supposed to cause problems with excess oil in the crankcase. I felt it was best not to experiment. So we never used filters that were unknown brands.

I do not know more, never had problem.

If USA could be Wix.

The box shows two kinds of bases. Amazon and others search shows Wix having another base type.

Detective work.

It may be the box creator thought nominal 5 microns means 99%? Who knows. The Wix does show a 5 micron rating which is not usual.

Is the Harley oil pressurized to the main bearings? I was looking at my old lawn mower that has a filter and actually what it does is takes some oil and returns it to the sump through the filter. The engine is still all splash lubed. That may explain why they can get away with a 5 micron rating?

The Harley is a normal pressurized roller bearing engine. It goes through the filter first. The micron rating is there to prevent the piston jets from getting blocked.

I bought 2 of their oil filters for my MB 3.0 diesel. Got them on a clearance from Rock Auto for about $5. They look very well made.

with hardleys poor oil pressure especially at idle if its "REALLY" 5 microns i would NOT use it, but newest M-8's are said to be better but they have their share of issues as well!!!

Is anyone else finding it hard to believe they get 99% at 5um and still flow enough lube for a FF application?
Color me a skeptic.

The pressure is only low because of the roller bearings. There is more oil flowing around in there than you think, and the 5 micron has been around for many years. I haven’t seen any Harley’s blowing up because of the oil pressure unless there are other issues at cause.

Great now I have to go around buying up all the old style 99A and 99B I can find...

It's interesting to pressurize roller bearings, it's a whole different kind of bearing than a plain bearings like cars have. The media mesh they show looks like Wix XP mesh. I wonder what the test is that shows 99%. My guess is these filters are not for cars or engines not specifying them, and they are made by Wix.
I wonder what the reason is they pressurize the bearing and what the oil pump flow rates are.

Roller bearings don't operate on hydrodynamic lubrication. The oil pressure is there just so the roller bearings get a good flow of oil supply.

I see an asterix on that efficiency statement on the box, but don't see what the asterixed footnote anywhere - maybe it's on one of the sides of the box? Like to know what it says.
