Does anybody know what brand of oil GM puts in their GM labeled bottles. Or do they blend it themselves. I am wondering because my 2001 8.1L will use a Qt in 3k on valvoline 5w30, but uses none in 3k when I have the dealer change the oil. Obviously the GM oil is better and I'm curious what it is.

dunno about the bottled stuff
bulk factory fill is Mobil dino (Mobil 1 syn in Vette)
Dex III transmission fluid is Petro Canada

It's been a few years ago but my brother worked for GM. At that time he said it was made by Havoline with a somewhat reduced additive package.

Well, the conventional Valvoline leaves A LOT to be desired in a motor oil. I have found engines use valvoline oil, when they don't use other brands. GM oil is either Mobil or Havoline dino. Either should be fine, but better is available, like Castrol or Chevron Supreme; although the Havoline seems to be a good dino. Personally, I would try to get something like the Castrol, Chevron or Havoline.

I talked to my Oldsmobile dealer's service writer. They use Mobil conventional oil. I looked on Mobil's web site, they have an MSDS for an oil named "Mobil-GM-Bulk" or something similar, so at least at one time, it was a special blend just for that contract.

Most of the auto dealer shops I've seen do not use the manufacturers branded motor oils. Generally they deal with one of the aftermarket brands directly. My Honda dealer, for example, pushes Pennzoil.

Are you certain that your dealer is even using GM branded oil?

Mobil got the GM contract about 2 years before Mobil 1 was speced for Corvette.

Some years back, they lost the bid, except for Mobil 1. I knew then, but not now, who got it.

By this time, could have changed again. Think "lowest bidder who can meet the minimum specs"

I am getting the drift that GM, America wide have a contract for bulk oil. Am I reading this right ?

My recent dealings with Nissan Downunder (yep, wrong hemisphere, and manufacturer to be on topic) is that the dealler can get whatever he wants that meets the manufacturer's specs.

One uses bulk Castrol (FMX Magnatec), one Bulk Valvoline (synsomething).

Turns out Castol and Valvoline will supply in bulk, provide a tank and decanting set-up, while Mobil sell them drums or bottles.

Funny when Nissan branded oil is not used by the dealer.

It always erked me that when you go to GM,Ford or whatever for service that the dealer uses whatever meets minimue spec. oil he can buy the cheapest. One would hope that the major manufactures would insist on using the branded oil they sell ie GM, motorcraft or whatever. I suppose it's a legel thing like you can't say your oil is better but, must say it meets the minimum xxx specs. ed
