I found 3 choices.

- Kia sedona 2009 LX - 19k miles. Dealer ask for $17,500. Basic trim and cloth seat. Car fax shows as rental 2 owners. Still in 5y/ 50K warranty.

- Grand caravan 2007 SXT, 49K miles. Dealer ask for $15,500. Full load (power every thing, leather seat, dvd). Car fax showed as lease vehicle, 1 owner. Don't have service information since the dealer is used car dealer, not Chrysler. No warranty left.

- Honda Odyssey 2007 EX-L, 80K miles. Dealer lists on website for $15,999. Full load with dvd. No warranty. Car fax show one owner (Texas) and the car was serviced at honda dealer very 5k or 10k.

My wife and I like to have leather seats since it's easy to clean. My wife like load option (power everything) but I don't care. She will drive this car around 7k mile/year.

Another option is to buy new 2010 Kia since it has cash back 3,000 which I think I can get it around $21,000 plus tax.

Which one would you choose?

Thanks.

I'd stretch and go new. Used is pricey lately. Does it have to be a van? Hyundai santa fes are $22k and have a 100k warranty for the original owner.

Odyssey. That thing will run forever with minimal upkeep.

You can always buy a warranty if you are paranoid.

Prices on all three are excellent, but the Honda is a smokin' deal. Almost too good to be true. That is a good $2000 below trade in value. We would sell a van like that for around $20000.

The Ody seems like a deal on the surface but be careful. It has mega miles and it's underpriced. Usually means someone wants to unload a dog. Also, financing will be more expensive on it and an extended warranty won't be cheap. Unless you are paying cash and can have the van inspected thoroughly, proceed with caution.

The other two seem fine, priced well. Again, an inspection first would be wise.

Good luck.

That is my concern. The list price is lower than other Odyssey. Hondacare warranty won't be offered if mile exceed 36k. I don't know any mechanic. Is it a good idea to bring it to Honda dealer and let them inspect the van?

I get a used car loan at 2.99% from a credit union. Finance should not be a problem.

The best is have the Odyssey inspected by a trusted mechanic at a cost of about $100-150 for about 3-4 hours, second best is have it inspected by a mechanic at Honda dealer.

Sure, call the dealer and ask if they'll do an inspection. Also search around for an indy Honda/Acura shop. Many of them will offer pre purchase inspections as well.

Better make sure your CR will financee a car with 80k miles. Alot of CR's are pretty picky about what they will fiance.

I would run away screaming from the Dodge.

How about a new Sienna??? Honda or not, 80k is alotta miles. perhaps the safest bet - but many many Oddy's lose their transmissions - and they are $4k to replace. two friends have had that prob.

Honda changed the transmission between '06 and '07 model years. The 4 speed from 99-01 was weak, the 5-speed from '02 through '06 had a retrofit (through about '04 sometime) to correct overheat on a gear pair but also had a condition that could cause the 2-3 clutch pack to overtemp.

Starting in '07 Honda changed to the 4 shaft design from the Ridgeline and that has proven to be a good unit.

The body is solid, the engines are easy on oil and it's had regular maintenance. You've got the 105 K service coming up but you should be good for a long time after that. Check the cabin air filter; if it's in good shape then they've probably done all the other maintenance.

I've owned an '03 since new (given to my kid with 130K miles) and it's been a great vehicle. Replacement is '09 now with 22K miles.

Of the choices I'd pick the Honda.

That is good to know. It would be due in 3 year base on the mileage we drive each year. That's not too bad.

I would avoid the Kia. They may be cheap to buy and seem like a nice car but when it comes time to repair them (and you will) the parts are expensive.
A family member has one and most of the parts we had to buy from the dealer. Things like brake rotors, sensors, wheel bearings, etc. Granted this was a 2003 (I think). Also a couple of years ago when I was trying to fix something on it I couldn't find a Chiltons or Haynes manual. It just didn't exist.

None of these, keep looking! Who thinks it is a good deal to buy a used minivan with 80k miles on it for $15,999?

The parts and labors for timing belt, water pump, spark plugs and valve adjustment should be $400-500 max, if you can find a good independent mechanic in your town and buy the parts online.
