Votes for the most practical remote or inline transmission filter for my F150? Goal is to see over 200k with minimal troubles. Just did a Mercon LV fluid exchange at 80k, installing an aux cooler and considering placing a remote or inline filter at the same time.

1. Remote filter kit such as Derale 15728
2. Magnefine 1/2 inch inline filter (R012M)
3. Motorcraft Ft-184 inline filter

I like the easy of install of the Magnefine and Motorcraft, plus the fittings they come with will also solve a minor plumbing dilema I've been thinking about. As nice as that is, its not enough to really sway the vote. With the Derale kit I have the ease and effectiveness of a spin on with little to no risk of extra leaks.

My only reservation is that the cooler line is controlled by an internal thermostat and thus doesn't see flow all the time. Possibly reducing the benefit of any of these filters...

Probably lower cost in the long run as well.

the in-lines install very easily. but the remote setup in the tundra just seems sturdier. consider that the magnefines are really supposed to be held by a bracket, but there's usually not a good place for a bracket and it end sup hanging by the hose, which is a potential crack in the plastic waiting to happen. I haven't had one fail, but I've read about one or two instances.

If you've got the hood space, which you should in a fullsize, do the real spin-on mount.

Mine has a t-stat on it too. It hardly flows in the winter but if you run the A/C it will reach temp consistently in other three seasons. Or if you're towing, it obviously gets warm enough towing.

I used Magnefine for a few years - changed once a year. Filter clamped to hose - or the metal with threads? Those cost more - plastic is cheaper. Going plastic you have to rig the thing up where it is easy to trim off some hose for a competent seal when time for a change.
Got tired of all that and worry about the plastic - been on Derale a good while now ... Right behind cooler

Depending an dedication to maintenance:

Frequent maintenance (every 250 hours): Remote with low-micron hydraulic filter. I'm using 3-micron Parker 20GPM filters.

Infrequent: Remote with good engine oil filter. Probably last the life of the vehicle.

I have used the in-line Magnafine filters in the past but switched over to the remote mounts which accept common engine oil filters. I just change the filters every 15,000 miles. I even have my power steering fluid filtered the same way. The way I figured it, the price of the remote mount with clamps and lines would equal the price of two Magnafines.
