The local auto-store sometimes has sales on Valvoline SynPower 5w30, but there are two different types.

First is SynPower FE 5W30 that is API SL, ACEA A5/B5 and Ford M2C-913-A/B/C.

Second is SynPower DX1 that is API SN, ILSAC GF-5, GM Dexos1 and MS 6395.

Both are full synthetics 5w30's at the same price and from the same manufacturer. Both would being going into an older Japanese car that would be happy on a low spec mineral oil. So no warranty issues to worry about.

Just your opinion of which would you consider to be the better of the two oils listed.

ACEA A5/B5 5w30 for sure. if a Newer vehicle then API SN version to protect the emission system in the long run

FE for sure

Thanks all, yes I agree the A5 rated SynPower FE is the pick. It should have more ZDDP and higher TBN than the Dexos oil.

Maybe, for production efficiency, the FE and the DX1 are the same basic oil with just a bit more add pack in the FE. Who know ?

Makes me think that Dexos1 = A5 Lite or should that be mid-SAPS A5 ?

That is interesting. I keep forgetting that in other parts of the world, an A5/B5 isn't necessarily SN/GF-5, like they almost always are here. Up here, I can't think of a single A5/B5 example that isn't also dexos1. Of course, not all dexos1 options are A5/B5, though.

I have the same dilemma with SynPower and that's why I don't use it.

Instead, my current OCI is on Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, which is both API SN and ACEA A5/B5. Plus, meets MS-6395 for my application, and a bunch of other good certifications.

Previously used Castrol Edge, but it's no longer ACEA A5/B5 and meets only "engine requirements" of MS-6395.

I go by what is being said on the actual product. Grey/silver bottle is PP, black is Castrol Edge, both 5w30.

As far as I can find WSS-M2C946-A is the latest for gasoline engines outside of Europe. The distinction by region is important because of differences in fuel standards. For example, in Europe they have lower sulfur content requirement. You may be thinking you are doing your engine a favor by using a European spec oil in US, but higher sulfur levels in US gas can eat that oil alive before your OCI is over.

I don't know much about Ford oil specs, but I'm sure some here do.

Anyway I double checked the Aussie Valvoline web site and they say for the SynPower FE 5w30
Quote:
SynPower FE 5w30 is a premium full synthetic engine oil designed for use in modern Ford engines with the intent to reduce exhaust emissions and improve fuel efficiency calling for Ford WSS-M2C-913-D, C, B and A. Also suitable for other passenger cars where ACEA A5/B5 or API SL/CF is recommended.

So it now lists the 913-D spec.

Ford WSS-M2C913-A
Engine oil, Initial and service fill, SAE 5w30. This specification meets the ILSAC GF-2 and ACEA A1-98 and B1-98 and additional Ford requirements.
Ford WSS-M2C913-B
The Ford M2C913-B specification is released in Europe for initial fill engine oils used for lubrication of spark ignition engines using gasoline and for compression ignition engines using diesel fuels. The specification is also used to define engine oils for servicing Ford engines where applicable. The oil shall meet all the requirements of the ILSAC GF-2 and GF-3 specification, the ACEA A1-98 and B1-98 specification and additional Ford requirements.
Ford WSS-M2C913-C
Fully backwards compatible and is strongly recommended for all applications that currently require the specification Ford M2C913-B. The new engine oil provides various benefits to the customer such as improved fuel economy benefits and high robustness to biodiesel fuels.
Ford WSS-M2C913-D
Introduced in 2012, oils meeting this specification are recommended for all Ford diesel engines except Ford Ka TDCi models manufactured before 2009 and Ford Galaxy 1.9 TDi models manufactured between 2000 and 2006. A product meeting this specification is especially recommended for diesel engines where M2C913-B or M2C913-C oils were initially required. An oil meeting this specification must be used in Ford Transit vehicles manufactured from 2012 onward with Duratorq 2.2 engine. Oils meeting this specification can be used with extended oil change intervals and are also suitable to be used in engines running on biodiesel or high sulfur diesel.
