So the toshiba looks better on paper.....however I have heard that their quality is going down and this is a new model with no reviews. The Sonys specs are not as good but has some cool features and great reviews. What do you guys think? I am just surfing on net...going back to school at some point...and watch videos. Not gaming on my computer. TIA

Most of the consumer laptops are the same these days, truthfully. Buy the one with the more powerful CPU.

It's not until you get into business-class laptops that the differences become apparent.

Seriously the last brand I would ever buy is Toshiba.. Oh and HP. Fixed way too many.

T series is a business laptop. Indeed a very nice one. The R series is identical, just a tad thicker and less expensive.

Dell. rarely have trouble with them. HP second because occasional battery problems. Best sound! For Toshiba its the shell, have to be careful, a drop and you may see a component fail. Acers have weak fans which leads to HD fail after a couple years.

Have a Best Buy or Walmart near you? Pretty good deals there. Go with the bigger screen if you can get it. And get an Intel processor only! Say no to AMD.

It is a business laptop. That is why they last. I also love the X series. I Have an X120E and its fantastic.

I've had pretty good luck with laptops based on the AMD Llano platform. That would be the AMD A6/A8/A10. They've got a nice Radeon graphics core on the cpu die that's significantly faster than the Intel integrated graphics. For most workloads, the cpu speed hasn't been an issue for years now that most laptops come with 2 or 4 cpu cores. The graphics is the real bottleneck.

I bought one of these for my wife and have been very satisfied with it:

For $100-200 less, you could get a similar machine with only a 15.6" screeen. My wife wanted the 17".

Best,

I just got a Lenovo B575 from Best Buy for $299. AMD E450 processor, 320 gig hard drive and 4 gig of RAM.

It's a great machine for the price!

A ThinkBrick? I didn't know that people bought them. I thought it was only IT departments.

They weigh as much as a tank, but they aren't indestructible. My T410 killed a disk last month, just when I needed it the most. And it's about as sleek and sophisticated as a pair of army-issue glasses.

My go-to laptop is an older Toshiba R200. It is very light yet has stood up to lots of travel abuse. I could see replacing it with an ultrabook now that software bloat is overcoming its 1.25GB maximum memory.

Well I actually had to cancel the order for that lenovo, because I realized it didn't have USB 3.0 or Gigabit ethernet, so I cancelled it and got this one instead. Which is better anyway, since it has the new Trinity cores,. better graphics cores, and has those. The only real downside is the casing is glossy plastic, but I can deal with that. I'm more about function than form anyway, I'll just have to learn to deal with my OC and the fingerprints lol

That's basically the same as the Toshiba I recommended, but with a smaller screen. I think you'll like it. The embedded Radeon graphics gpu is pretty darned fast and you'll have 4 cpu cores to do the grunt work. Nice score at that price.

Best,

if you have a microcenter by you they have an asus with the b815 celeron(sandybridge) that will do all that for 259$ and its definitely not a netbook or anything pokey.
