So my Amazon.com delivery just came. I ordered 1 Denso oil filter and one NPN. I know Denso is a reputable company, but I have also heard that NPN is one of the top OEM suppliers for Japanese automobiles. I have taken a few pictures of both. They seem to be identical except for color and ADBV color. Denso ADBV is orange.

The Denso clearly looks much more fancy, while the NPN is nothing special. I can't seem to find anything about NPN in regard to people using them in the USA.

Prices:
NPN: $5.38
Denso: $8.40

That's almost no information to go on. The Denso I guess, it looks like it has a Silicone ADBV while the NPN looks nitrile. But "looks" can be deceiving.

The prices, though... you can do better for less.

Bought some Denso FTF for the Tacoma for $4.24 each off Amazon and they are BUILT and quite heavy. They prices really vary on Amazon. Right now mine model is $6.80 but I only order when they are cheap and I need to bring a order up to $25 for free shipping.

For me, it is about backflow prevention.

I have bought a $13 Mobil 1 filter and a $4 Purolator filter, and both have had backflow prevention that has failed in short order so that the engine has a couple to about 5 seconds of rattling and clicking before enough oil works through the system to lubricate the engine. Too many engine starts like that is not good.

Now I only buy Motorcraft oil filters for my Fords and I never have that problem. Basically, I have to believe most filters do an ample job of filtering, but I am more concerned that it keep the oiling system primed so that I am not clacking for a few seconds on every start.

Not all that big of a deal when you consider that these are for a Subaru flat four, and the current spec filters are really tiny.
To the OP, I've used M1s, Fram TG and Puro classics on our Forester. It has a K&N at the moment.
In a Subie, I wouldn't think that the anti-drainback valve is of any importance given the orientation of the filter.
I know that ours makes no start-up noises using any filter.
You can probably do just fine with a Puro classic.
Is this a turbo Sube?
If it is, given the 1960s oil drain intervals Subaru requires, I wouldn't spend too much on an oil filter.

What length do you run between changes?
I am anal, and ran GC 6K on the last change, although given the way the car is now used (about 25 miles each way every day), the Subaru rec of 7.5K is probably okay.

I am actually going to change the AFE in the Forester soon since it has reached the 5k mark.

UOA to be done of course.

I did overfill it a tad when I topped up 1000 miles back. Can't say the engine is complaining though, sounds the same and the oil level hasn't even changed.

It most likely needed 1/2 quart, I think I added 3/4-1 qt without looking because I got distracted by making sure my daughter wasn't being too curious outside.

You guys will love what I am contemplating running next.

I hope the low price makes up the the loss of fuel economy you'll most likely experience

. Before my BITOG days I thought that "thickerer is betterer". I went from using Mobil 1 5w30, recommended oil, in my Ford Contour to using Castrol 5W-50 Syntec. It felt sluggish and I lost around 6+ mpg. I used it for about 2 years so it wasn't my imagination. Went back to Mobil 1 5w30 and all is right again

Well it's on clearance so I may or may not care about fuel economy

Ya know oil hording & all however I could just spike a normal batch of 5w30 with it for a while.
