Where to recycle old coolant?

Most auto repair shops have a huge vat where old coolant is dumped, and then hauled off by a recycling company. If you get some work done there, the repair center will probably take it away for you.

Many local sewer systems are just fine with coolant if you flush it down the toilet...but probably not recommended with a septic system.

We reciently had to put our old "vaporizer" away. We used to just leave it out in the sun to evaporate but the city said no more. Now we must have the old coolant hauled away.

Cost's $360 to have a 55gallon barrel hauled off here in SoCal.

Several of the local auto part stores near my house including Checker and auto zone told me that they don't take used coolant. The local city building that houses the Trash trucks and snow plows take coolant, and oil in clear containers that are properly marked

Just do it at 3 in the morning over a storm drain...no one will be the wiser all tucked into their cozy beds...Just kidding! Dispose of waste properly- ask a mechanic buddy to do it for you.

This is a frustrating topic for me, in San Diego, CA. I once tried to take 2 buckets back to every auto store and repair place in my area. Nobody takes coolant. I have to save it up in my garage until the city does a household waste recycling event nearby (once or twice a year). What do they expect us to do with it? You can buy coolant everywhere but nobody takes it back. It is like they are asking you to dump it in the street.

Drop it off in front of city hall at night, with a note attached explaining what it is and why.
