When Did You Start Using Synthetic Oil?

I started using synthetic back in the late 70's when Pennzoil PZL came out. I went back to Pennzoil conventional when PZL disappeared from the market.

I've gone back to synthetic with PP in the past year.

'PZL' wasn't a full synthetic....it was a blend designed for long drains, along the line of STP '15,000' mile oil.

Pennzoils first full synthetic was 'Performax, which came out in about 1991, and came in 5w30, 10w30, and 5W-50 grades.

First bottle was Mobil 1 in 1979. I asked for some information about synthetic oil and Mobil sent a nice size package very surprising as I wasn't expecting something like that. Even wrote about UOA, this was in 1976. It was pretty nice of them.

Last year when I discovered this website, now its 5W30 or 0W40 synthetic for winter and 15W40 rotella T for summer in everything. Cars, atv, rotatiller...
Thanks BITOG!

Johnny, do you remember Valvoline ESP? That was a late 70s/early 80s mix of synthetic and non-synthetic oil. I would guess that ESP and PZL were among the first of what we would alter call synthetic blends?

I started in 1978 with amsoil. I was a Amsoil dealer while I lived in Phoenix, AZ. I have used Mobil 1 and Amsoil off and on for several years. I switched to Pennzoil Platinum about 4 years ago. I'll stick with it until something better comes along. As long as I can afford synthetics I will use it.
Does anyone think there is a better oil than Pennzoil Platinum in 5w30 weight?

I think it was by the third or fourth (2005?) oil change of my mom's then fairly new Camry that I convinced her to use synthetic. I think it was Mobil 1 5w30 if I remember correctly. Got it changed at Wally World before the prices got ridiculous. Three oil changes in there after I had to argue with the guy there that I should get the 5th quart of oil (syn oil isn't cheap bulk so I felt it is like cheating the customer for not letting them have it after being asked) since it was technically paid for that I decided to change the oil on that car myself.

In my first car, I think it was the second oil change I put in Mobil 1 0w-20. I was so happy to find the last four quarts on the shelf at WM at the time. This must have been mid to late 2005.

1990, in our then 90K Civic Wagovan.
Slick 50 full syn 10w30.
Used some brand of syn ever after, although I also have resumed some dirt cheap dino use since I started lurking here four or five years ago.
