Hi you all,

I'm getting ready for my next OCI and wnat a quick opinion between the brands of Puralator or fram brands of oil filters.

On there website they site Puralotors "PURE ONE" and Frams two better ones "XTENDGUARD" and "TOUGHGUARD". Is there much difference between the two brands.

I know I don't want to ever get the orange can Fram!

The better Frams are quite good. On the other hand, you can get five PureOnes from Advance Auto for 15 bucks with their coupon codes, and that is also an excellent filter. Personally I would get the Pure1, but quality wise I'd say they are a wash.

The only bad Fram is their cheapest line, where we seem to have a blowout or two every year. And while that's a pretty low rate considering how many people come here, you can still do better for less money.

I would use any filter on your list. Pick the cheapest. The Extended Guard seems to be quite the filter for the $$$ if you are doing extended oil change intervals. Oil filters unless the come apart and run you engine aren't a big deal . The filter to worry about for engine life is the Air filter and the seal of the intake plumbing.

Thanks for your replies guys. I just needed a semi second oppinion about the filters cuz generally I do know it's easiest to stick to a brand name.

I'm glad the better made Frams are good to use and will use either that or the Puralotor version. The so called orange can Frams I use back when I was in junior college and never had any issues with them despite the rumors of can bursting and such.

Any way thank thanks for the replies and now I'm comfortable to move on.

How well does the fine sieve Pure-One flow after it gets 1/2 plugged with sludge and varnish? - I couldnt get enough oil pressure to run my Yaris with one last winter. Plus, the baseplate is designed incorrectly and doesnt fit the 1NZ-FE engine properly. 2 thread engagement gives a great seal against bypass leak by. Nope. I think most filter failures are due to coolant in the oil - most all media would not tolerate this. Case in point, BITOG lost a Purolator classic recently to this issue - some conveniently forget this fact.
Me- I prefer the most filter media area I can get in the can so that's why the OC is out of the equation for me. Wix make a Camry unit that fit my 1NZ and that my go to unit (wix p/n 51396)
I also dont worry about cost - $3 dollars one way or the other.

One might also say that for just a bit more buy the Fram and not even consider the Pure One.

PureOne filters flow just as well or even better than most filters out there.

Even if the filter was completely plugged, the bypass should allow enough oil to keep the engine alive. Any filter becomes more restrictive with debris loading, which pushes it closer to a bypass event. That's why there are bypass valves on oil filters.

Doubt that it would matter.
I've used both and found both satisfactory.
There is a good deal currently to be had for the P1 if you order online for store pickup from AAP, and use one of the 40% off discount codes.
Net $3.00 each.
A good time to stock up, for those who have an application for which a P1 is available.

Just buy the standard Purolator Classic for your Yaris.

Unless you are going to leave it on for over 6000 miles there is no reason to pay extra for the Pure One.

Some people like to get as much of their oil filtered as possible, and to me that is worth it. I mean, even if you are changing once every 3 months. It's only $2 more dollars...so money is not really an issue here if we're talking reasonably, IMO. That being said, sure the classic would do the job.

If only all the suckers knew the difference in quality of oil filters then Fram would go out of business. Walmart would have to give all that shelf space to Purolator Classics.

I dont know if its a nationwide thing but my local kmart exclusively carries purolator products. You wont find anything to compete with it and they sell out of their filters oil filters like crazy. Which blows my mind that they would run out since they can buy a few thousand in one order. Its not like they arnt going to sell!
