What's a reasonable amount of time to wait?

Random is fine. But having to take time off from another job is absolutely not ok.

Me- I'm working my other job. I get off at 5. Here is my schedule, feel free to schedule a drug test when I am not working.

I have been tested the last 20+ years. Never had that problem before. I had just the opposite though. My old Boss comes up behind me in the restroom right after peeing and informs me that Im up for a test first thing that morning. I had to chug a bunch of water and wait over an hour to give a sample to them.

i'm not DOT, the the place used by my employer, test almost all the transporters around O'Hare airport.
they will prepare the toilet with special dye, give you the bottle, and have an employee sit close to you/open door to ensure you not substituting/tempering with the sample.

much of what Pop_rivit said is true also(he worked in a transportation facility before)

usually i look at this as extra paid time-off.
Not funny when you still have to do your load for the day....
all the best from a respectful 4-wheeler!

Good to hear that boss is not a moron...the way you were treated is outrageous! I hope he has some harsh words to share with that first lab.

My first employer instituted random drug testing a few years after I had hired in, and I was "randomly" selected in the first week because I was young and had long hair...by best friend at the company got the "random" call at the same time. It was all in-house, but tossed together in a slapdash way...went where I was told and a young lady sitting at a school-type desk in a hallway handed me a Dixie cup and pointed to the bathroom. I had been saving up and figured that if they wanted some pee, I would give them all they could use...filled that Dixie cup up to the brim!
Handed it back to the gal in the open hallway (embarrassing as he!!) and she said, "Oh my!!!" She balanced the cup precariously on the slanted desktop while she finished the paperwork and I was just waiting for it to tip and splash all over her...didn't happen. Had no worries because I stopped my drug use after college.

The only people that should be terminated are the idiots at the lab. By any reasonable measure of accommodation, the OP has plenty of recourse. The employer could then theoretically use a-hole drug testing labs to make employees quit or to fire them. Nonsense...

??????????????

Every drug test I've taken was on the clock and me getting paid for my time.

In my state, if that case went to arbitration, they would find for the employee 100% of the time and they would be returned to work immediately with any back pay required. There are working people with BPH symptoms that can't even wait 15-30 min following a significant intake of water before having to go asap...one way or another. I took dozens of random drug tests in both the Navy and my last employer of 20 years....never had to wait for than 5-15 min. Then again, the health "care" system has fallen by the way side in the past 8 years.

You should have went to Jack in the Box, buy a soda cup, pee in it and then take it back to the lab, slap it on the desk and walk out. j/k

but it's not boss "A"s responsibility to pay me to do a drug test for job "B". He was nice enough to let me cut loose for an hr to-do this which should not have been an issue. 10 minutes there,15 to do paperwork ,pee and 10 back I could do on my early lunch break. As it was I was late back to my regular job.

Seems like all the drug test places are 9-4 around here and no weekends which is a problem for me.

Stinks to have to take time off from Employer A, but Employer B should be paying for your time to test.

As far as waiting, 15 minutes for that type of test is on the long side, 30 is ridiculous. One has to be careful about having it count as a refused test. Sounds like you worked it out with Employer B, but in that situation an immediate phone call or email explaining what happened is important.

I had a drug test like this at a chain ("Concentra") that treats walk-ins like they/we are druggies. The paperwork I presented the boss kept in a safe. They also screen for at-work injuries and other types of medical care where there is a presumption of guilt on the part of an employer or insurance company.

Same deal with the special toilet with the dye, and no sink in the restroom, so I can't dilute my pee. Hold the vial, touch the door handle, hand off the sample, use the public lab sink to wash my hands.

But they were courteous over what could be embarrassing and got me in and out quickly.

I was working on a mine site on a massive station one time and was 10 miles away when they radio'd in that i had to go to base to do a pee test... they were not impressed I wasn't available immediately, no amount of explanation helped....
